dark chocolate is my "treat"... i enjoy a few small bricks nightly, maybe 5 nights a week. this has been my ritual since ditching grains and other junk foods. yes, i know that the sugar content is an issue here, so we don't need to visit that "dark side" of chocolate!!
i can't think of what else could be causing this, as when i remove it from my diet, my symptoms resolve within a few days..
since my chocolate ritual began, i've had massively loose stools.. bowel emptying stools, every morning, before i eat breakfast, before consuming anything at all. my question is this: is it really the chocolate? everything i read online (yeah, i know.. internet not always right), says that dark chocolate is actually known to treat diarrhea! so WTH? is it my personal reaction to is? is there something i don't know about chocolate that i need to know? magnesium? fat? is it unhealthy to poop this completely? i will give up chocolate if i need to, but want to know the science behind this!!
What type of chocolate are you eating?
I was at the store the other day, and saw these new Hershey's sugar free chocolate. They caught my attention so I flipped them over to see the nutritional value and ingridients. They had a sugar substitute in them and below all of that, it said that it could act like a laxative for some people. So It is possible, check the ingridients!
I put http://www.amazon.com/Navitas-Naturals-Chocolate-Organic-16-Ounce/dp/B001E5E0Y2 in my whey shakes. I started with a heaping teaspoon and got a bit runny. After cutting back the amount and slowly working up all was well. I use about two teaspoons per shake now with no problems.
I have interesting situation. I am chocoholic, I simply love things with good chocolate. Just one problem: my threshold for stuff seems to be diminishing. Now I frequently experience what I call 'chocolate diarrhoea' stools. It even looks like chocolate sauce or syrup at times. But I know it is obviously mix of other intestinal contents and... well... chocolate! Is this common? I am 23year old male from Japan. I hate to have to start give up chocolate! My stools can easily be mistaken for chocolate syrup or pudding! What am I to do? On average I have from two to three bars some days of week, from Meiji, Glyco, etc. Thank you.
I eat a goodly amount of Lindt 85% or 90% almost every day, and when I first started, I noticed the same thing. I gave the chocolate a rest for a while and when I did return to it I made certain to eat less. I find that if I eat too much I still get some stomach upset/loose stools, but it's better now than it was. Keep it to a square or two and you should be fine. If you want to have more than that, perhaps stagger it over a period of hours so that you're not putting it all into your stomach at once. Sometimes I'll grab a square or two out of the freezer and then, after dinner, grab another one. Works for me.
Of course, it goes without saying that you must eat the good stuff. Don't bother with any milk chocolate or sugar-free chocolates chock full of junk additives. If you haven't, develop a taste for 85% or higher dark chocolate. A little goes a long way and it's more satisfying than, say, Hershey's.
