Cutting out bread and rice is super easy for me...but sweet potatoes are a huge part of my diet. I'm not trying to lose weight, just be healthy and stick to the basic ideas of paleo. Should I ditch sweet potatoes? I have them probably 2-3x/week.
Like others have said, if weight isn't a problem, I'd eat them until your heart is content. Unfortunately, almost everything these days is geared toward the overweight and obese, and you will hear many people just completely rail on starches. Unfortunately, condemning "starch" is like condemning "fat." The good ones get shunned for absolutely no reason.
Sweet potato is fine, and many people here (including me) eat white potato too. I also think white rice is basically benign -- I don't eat it often because it isn't nutritionally dense, but I don't see any harm in it if you can afford the calories & carbs.
I have 2-3 per day along with 2-3 white potatoes...I think it's really about your activity levels. Not exactly paleo eating all those carbs but If your workouts are intense and your feeling good why not?
Even with eating insane amounts of potatoes everyday during my PWO dinner I am still able to fast for 20 hours with very little issues.
Like with everything...try it out and see what works for you. I find potatoes (white, sweet, and yams) to be a reliable staple in my diet.
I don't see any reason to dump em...unless maybe if you want to go into ketosis every once in a while.
Probably the best reason not to dump them: Olive oil + Sweet potato + Parsley + Red Peppers = Heaven. Safe comfort food in my opinion.
I eat baked sweet potatoes daily, but limit the serving size to 2 ounces, and eat it about 2X daily. I'm in ketosis, losing weight (at 60 or lower g/carbs daily--which I will be bringing down to 40), and it seems to be working for me.
i eat sweet potatoes, white potatoes and white rice in moderation (being asian it's basically impossible to never eat white rice)
here's a quick guide - i threw brown rice in there as a comparison
1 medium sweet potato = 23 grams / 102 cal
1 potato = 36 grams / 160 cal
1 cup of white rice cooked = 53 grams / 240 cal
1 cup of brown rice cooke = 45 grams / 218 cal
