It's hayfever season where I live and I was hoping that eating Paleo would get rid of hayfever symptoms. Sadly, it did not. My question is, how bad are antihistamines? Are they similar to NSAIDS? Are there any safe ones to take? I don't take any medication unless absolutely necessary. I haven't taken antihistamines yet but I am sick of feeling dreadful everyday. Even if I remain indoors, I still get symptoms.
Tried taking dairy and eggs out and helped!
What really helped me this past October during ragweed pollen season was taking a combination of turmeric capsules and quercetin & bromelain capsules in the morning with breakfast. The combination provided about 6 hours of congestion runny nose relief with no noticeable side effects.
I don't think they are as bad as NSAIDs, though obviously there is a huge difference among the antihistamines. Some of the old ones are so strong they'll keep you in bed wondering why the world is spinning. Check those side effect listings carefully. It is likely you can find one with minimal issues. There may be a few herbal alternatives out there, and then there are those people who avoid food sources of histamines, but sometimes you've got to take something in order to feel well enough to hash out a plan.
benadryl REALLY messes up my gut. i'm still recovering from having to take it for a bad outbreak of hives a few weeks back. i tried all the natural antihistamines like vit c and quercetin, but they don't do much.
Paleo hasn't helped me with my allergies either...and I'm allergic to just about everything in Ohio (I'm seriously considering moving to the gulf coast of Florida, but can't move just yet). I was hoping all the fermented foods would help but they don't. I usually take a Loratadine daily to survive. My allergist has said that it's the weakest of the antihistamines available. I can tell this when allergens get really bad. I just suffer through. I happen to get allergy shots too (I know some people avoid these things, but for me the small benefit I'm getting outweighs the misery I used to be in with constant sinus infections. Yearly testing shows that I'm slowly, but surely becoming more immune to the allergens that I have an allergy to).
