I have been using castor oil as a natural moisturiser. It's great, but very thick and viscous, so I've been trying to switch to coconut oil, but it makees me break out a little. Is this an adjustment period or am I simply sensitive to it?

What has been your experience of CO on your skin?

No problems. Sugar and wheat give me acne. – No more. Dec 31 2010 at 8:02

Coconut oil is comedogenic, as is it has the tendency to block pores.

The best solution I've found it to occasional breakouts is the oil-cleansing method:

I picked up a cheap facial steamer and some castor and sunflower oil, whole kit cost me less than 25 euro ($30) and it's surprisingly effective given how expensive the creams are that I have tried.

I have never used coconut oil on my skin for this reason. I did use it in my homemade deodorent and had it block my pours. I switched to olive oil and it worked better. For my skin I use a mix of castor, e and sometimes some almond, grapeseed or olive. The castor drys my skin too much when used straight up during the day. I use more e during the winter. Maybe even a little coco butter. More castor during the summer. I just steam by using the spray from a hot shower or a hot washcloth. – Vrimj Jan 1 2011 at 19:03

I've heard Jojoba oil matches the pH of skin. also Mountainroseherbs.com has coconut based facial creams (with other oils) that I really like.

How long have you been using it? I'm trying to figure out if you get used to it over time. – Glither Dec 31 2010 at 8:19

I have no issues with it and I used to get really bad acne as a kid. Have you cut out ALL dairy (cheese, sour cream, milk, etc..)?

I have a tiny bit of milk in one cup of coffee/day and I eat the occasional raw milk cheese. With those, I have no pimples. BTW, Before I improved my diet, I would have a pimple here & there, blackheads, and large pores. All of that is gone. YEA! The spots I have now are clearly from the CO. I figure either CO on my skin just doesn't agree with me, or there is an adjustment period. I know it is anti-virul, anti-fungal, antibiotic, so I thought it might be cleaning something out of my skin. I wanted to know if others had reactions for a while and then were able to use it. – Glither Dec 31 2010 at 11:20
That's good to hear. I used to get horrible acne. Had to do 2.5 rounds of accutane (once is supposed to cure for life), and still had to use Retina A daily or would get acne. Granted I'm a older now but my skin is bullet proof on Paleo. I wish I would have known about Paleo when young and thank God I didn't get any scaring. – Geoff Dec 31 2010 at 18:03

What else are you putting on your skin? Have you tried switching brands of coconut oil? is the coconut oil you are using steam deodorized? I find the raw natural that contains the fragrance to be irritating to my skin.

I second the oil cleansing method, though it does take a few weeks for your skin to adjust.

I also tried to use coconut oil and started to break out. I think my skin is naturally sensitive (probably from using crap mainstream products for years!). I'm going to try jojoba oil instead. For now I've stopped using any products except twice-daily chamomile tea as toner and a weekly homemade exfoliation (cornmeal or coffee grinds, honey, etc). My skin is so soft and radiant!
