A couple times now, I've seen leg of lamb for sale at the regular grocery store nearby that is labeled "Product of Australia." It is not labeled grass fed or organic.

My understanding is that cows and sheep are generally not fed grain in Australia, so even though it's not labeled grass fed, I'm thinking it probably is. Also, even if not certified organic, my assumption is that cows and sheep are generally raised properly in Australia.

Are these safe assumptions? Or, are there CAFOs, even in Australia?

Thanks,

Mike

Most of the lamb in Australia are grass fed, a significant proportion are grain finished and a very small minority are fed exclusively grains, also my source is dated, by 5 years or so, the comment that new zeland's meat is more likely grass fed is also accurate according to what I've read.

Probably not grass fed. I would proceed w/ caution. You're much safer w/ New Zealand lamb, but you'll have to pay ($$).

I listened to a podcast with Dr. Stephen Gundry last week, and I believe he said that Australian lamb is NOT grass fed.

If you happen to have Trader Joe's in your area, they sell excellent lamb chops and leg cuts from New Zealand's Atkins Farms...lately they even changed the packaging to indicate "grass fed":-)

Nice! We do most of our shopping at Trader Joe's. I will definitely check it out. Do you know if that definitely means it's not grain finished? – Mike T Jan 26 at 12:57
They don't indicate this, but I remain hopeful... – Kira Jan 29 at 6:59
