I eat how much fruit I want. I eat how much vegetables (although even a "lot" of veggies is hard to do butI eat what I want) and moderate meats/eggs. I do about 100-150 grams of protein a day. I eat red meat, chicken etc.
I do well. I am losing fat. Gaining muscle and feel fine.
Am I Paleo? This is serious question. I am surprised fruit is so maligned here. I can't live without fruit and when I cut it out I feel like crap.
Fruit gets demonized here since so many paleo people are trying to undo years of overconsumption of all types of sugars, are fighting obesity, or are pre- or full blown diabetic. I also blame a certain speech by a gentleman called Lustig.
Fruit is fine for the rest of us in moderation. FWIW I eat 1-2 servings of fruit daily, 2-5 on workout days, more sugars from other sources, and have no issues - lost 25kg on this diet.
Sorry I don't know how to reply @ Mscott- Thanks for that. I eat a lot of fruits though, we are talking 6-8 servings a day. Truthfully on this diet I feel better than ever. Also I found that I need to eat real fatty meats about 2-3 a week like ribs, fatty steaks etc. If I cut down red meat too much I notice fat loss slows and muscles don't look as "hulky"(???) as usual. My strength has gone through the roof and at 45 I am outfitting my 20 year linebacker son. He thinks I am "juicing". LOL.
I know this is an old post, but as someone who HAS to be (not fad-diet) wheat and dairy free, the only way I can function is with fruit, veggies, and meat as my main diet staples. If I don't have it I get really grumpy really fast. I have also never had a problem dropping weight as long as I exercise, though, so it could just be that my body needs all of that sugar for energy.
Meanwhile, my boyfriend was only doing meat, veg, and dairy for a while and broke out in this really weird rash. Added in a few bananas and he was right as rain. So I think people's body chemistry is all very different and people should just find what is right for them.
I eat lots of fruit and raw veggies. About half of my meals are raw vegan and the other half are more like what most paleo people on here eat. I feel wonderful eating like this. If lots of fruit works for you, then go for it. It works for me too.
The one exception that I have noticed is when I get used to eating too much chocolate (which does happen... I have a sweet tooth) or ice cream even, the only way for me to get off of the sugar is to cut the fruit out until I get back on track.
Well is it paleo according to how our ancestors ate, I would say yes pretty much, except that they didn't have access to a full range of fruits and berries year round like we do. More likely they ate fruit only when in season, though note in some areas there is some kind of fruit almost always in season.
Is it the ideal diet, I am not sure. I personally don't do well with lots of fruit, it doesn't digest well in large amounts, however I don't get the energy peaks and valleys from most fruit the same as I do from wheat and sugar. If I had to eat a lot of something besides meat/fish/eggs it would probably be vegetables or dairy.
Fructose gets demonized in many paleo circles because for a lot of people it causes issues, halts weight loss, gives insulin spikes, etc. particularly if they're eating processed fruit foods or juices, which have way more fructose than real fruit.
Ultimately I'd worry more if the diet is working for you than if it follows some recipe or guidance.
My understanding is that over consumption of fructose has negative consequences. I'm paleo also, but I get most my carbs from potatoes (glucose) and other starchy tubers. ( I also find I function better with carbs than without).
But take it with a grain of salt, I don't believe that some fruit sometimes is going to make you drop dead by any means, and if it's the only way you feel optimal then so be it. But my sister has been vegan for 6 years and always says she feels great, until last week when she got the first 8 cavities of her life at 29 :s.
So I'd encourage you to try tubers like potatoes, but that's just me. Do what's best for You.
