We are taking our 2 and 4 year old on a trip in a few weeks (flying into Fort Lauderdale and then cruising for a week.) I'm not concerned about the cruise itself as there will be paleo options for us there, but does anyone have tips on paleo snacks to bring for the airport/flight?
I'm mostly concerned with keeping their tummies full (and avoiding meltdowns) when we're at the airport, in long lineups, 3 hour flight, transfer to hotel, etc etc. Any tips would be much appreciated!
Here are some of our favorites (I have 4 kids, aged 3 to 12). Whole nuts aren't a good option for a few of my kids. The trick is to get enough fat in there. I can fit all this in a small lunch-bag style cooler.
PIZZA ROLLUPS: deli ham layered with pepperoni and butter, rolled up (I also like to add dill pickles on to mine)
NUT BUTTER SNACK PACK: homemade almond butter (recipe here: http://www.health-bent.com/snacks/maple-almond-snack-packs) with apples, carrots, celery
BANANA MASH: avocado, banana, coconut butter, hot water. Mash together until it makes a thick cereal-like mash; this is surprisingly good
TRAIL MIX: cut up tiny pieces of beef jerky (depending on what the 2 yr old can chew), coconut flakes, dried fruit of choice (we like mango and dates), dark chocolate chips (it is vacation!).
US Wellness Meats has some beef snack sticks that I love to take on the road; they are a bit spicy for the kids. Hard boiled eggs are also good (take a fun salt, like pink salt, for sprinkling). For something really portable and for desperate moments, we have Larabars (which we never eat on a regular basis, but ok for travel).
AIRPORT FOOD: the best option I have found if you have to eat in the airport is to find a restaurant that serves fajitas. One order of fajitas is a great snack for all of us (minus the chips and tortillas of course). Sometimes you can even get them to bring lettuce leaves as a replacement for the tortillas.
Whether I am traveling by myself or with kiddos, I pretty much pack the same snacks. Jerky, ham or turkey and cheese roll-ups, string cheese, chopped veggies (celery, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots travel well), dried fruits, apples, and sometimes peeled oranges. If it is something that needs to stay cold, I freeze bananas whole. Most of the time, we also eat the banana, though sometimes it is too mushy if I froze it too ripe. I use glass storage containers at home, but when traveling I will use the Gladware because it is so light and nests well when empty.
We take empty water bottles through security and fill them up on the other side.
I usually make banana chips, tomato chips, or other dried fruit and take with me. Especially since I am usually travelling to less Paleo friendly destinations. If I run out of goods or have a layover of more than 2 hours, then I'll find the nearest kiosk that sells trail mixes and snacks and get something.
Not sure what hotel you are staying at but most of the ones I have been too recently also have snacks you can buy too (crazy expensive though), if you had to in a pinch.
