Id like to build a backyard obstacle course, and Id love to hear your ideas for what Obstacles to implement.

Log Runs, Wall Climbs, Brush Crawl, Rock Leap etc.

What Obstacles are going to simulate Natural Environmental situations and train and challenge me more away from being a "zoo human"...

Where possible describe your Obstacle(s) of choice, bonus points for pictures.

Im thinking something along the lines of "Ninja Warrior"

A tree and a rope to climb of course.

When all the ideas are in I'm going to steal them.:) My dad has 11 acres and I have plenty of room to build a course also. This is a great thread! – Aaron Curl Jan 9 2011 at 14:40

What about tires step through (I'm thinking simulating crossing a river/stream) or hay bales to climb over?

At least part of the course should be done while carrying a sandbag or similar unbalanced weight. I like to walk across fields, climb over fences, and climb up trees with fifty pounds of sand in a canvas sack. It is also fun to carry while wading in streams. I like to justify it by saying that paleolithic man would have had to carry prey home while avoiding becoming prey himself.

Like Mov Nat you need to pick up a 250 pound log and put that on the shoulder and run/walk with it. – Aaron Curl Jan 9 2011 at 14:37

Exercise is not the issue. I'm very fit. The issue is entertainment in a natural movement setting that others can participate in as well – Stephen-Aegis Jan 9 2011 at 1:16

I'd search YouTube and Google Images for examples of existing obstacle courses, and build what appeals to me.

Also, have you heard of parkour? It's the discipline of movement. More specifically, it's about using your body to move efficiently through your environment. Check out this video as an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMppD-bUNWo

Note that one should begin learning parkour slowly, and preferably with an existing group of knowledgeable practitioners to teach and help guide you.

Been trying to find parkour locally for a while now. – Stephen-Aegis Jan 9 2011 at 1:50
Your blog says that you're in Gainesville, GA. I did a quick search for parkour groups there, but didn't find any. Would it be too far to travel to Atlanta or Athens to train parkour? There's definitely a big community in Atlanta, and a few in Athens. Here's the link to the American Parkour forum for Georgia: americanparkour.com/smf/index.php/board,23.0/… However, it sounds like most south-east activity happens on this site: overflux.com – Nick Jan 9 2011 at 14:10

This might be a lot of fun, but it's risky to be sure. Be careful!
