I've been seeing alot of people mix up how many eggs they eat, maybe 3 eggs and 2 egg whites etc. How many eggs (lets say per week) is too many? Is there serious benefit to doing some form of whole egg + whites combo? I know some do it for cholesterol, any other benefits?

I haven't had my cholesterol tested in a long time, but it was fine before and I eat approx 12-16 eggs a week now.

@OP, food cholesterol does not affect blood cholesterol. I prefer over 5 easy eggs cooked slow in butter about 5-7 times a week. Eggs are the perfect food, hands down. – Aaron Curl Jan 11 2011 at 14:28

I eat 5 whole free range eggs a day for breakfast, with one bit of some free range bacon and some tomato and hard aged cheese. My LDL is well below any risk markers. My only concern is omega-6, which is why I go free range, so theres less.

I am 70 now, for years I had been having regular braakfast, 2 eggs, a coffee and a bowl of salad. That together with some eggs in other dishes make it 18 eggs a week. I had a very good profile for fats and cholesterol. I was warned about more than 1 egg per day and I did reduce my intake to max of 6 eggs per week.My yearly chlosteral profile turned bad. Had a short discussion with my Doctor, I intend to have the nice Breakfast of 2 eggs, a coffee and salad again!

Oh, I decided to write the above as I was surprised that many in this site was having more eggs than me and all of them stress that they are quite happy with their cholesterol profile. I feel very relief to hear that. – I K Xora Feb 5 2012 at 15:14

I'm thinking of eating the majority of my calories from eggs, and a little meat here and there being that I work in a resort and am surrounded by unhealthy, fried, creamy sauce animal products... I have a new video shoot for my band coming up in 10 days and I need to loose some weight FAST, could this be an option? I mean, I would still be getting adequate fat and moderately high protein... I understand that in the long run this may not be an optimal option, but it's the healthiest option I have here (Morocco)

Thanks..

I eat probably 60 eggs a week most weeks, it's a good way to get calories as an endurance athlete and if it's holding me back in any way, not aware of it. Possible but I'm more than getting by.

The egg white is mostly protein, whereas the yolk is rich in beneficial nutrients. Practically speaking, you can't over eat the yolks. Some folks limit or even discard the egg white as part of their overall effort to limit daily protein intake.

Paul Jaminet in the book Perfect Health Diet, for example, recommends between 200 and 600 calories daily from protein because protein restriction may extend lifespan.

Eating omega-3 eggs would, in theory, mitigate any effect of the omega-6 in the yolk. This is what I do, and I eat a ton of eggs.

just be careful not to overcook said "omega 3" eggs and oxidize the PUFA. – Stephen-Aegis Jan 11 2011 at 23:08
Why not just eat free range eggs which are lower in omega-6? Id rather not eat anything that come from chickens feed weird stuff myself, god knows what in those things.. – Jamie Jul 7 at 3:45
I separate my eggs cook the white (scrambled) then when pan is still hot add yolk and lightly cooks them in the hot pan – fromthericefields Sep 1 at 14:53

I don't usually eat more than 4-5 a day at most because of omega 6. I have maybe a dozen-two dozen a week though.

Well, if you ask the French, one egg is an oeuf. (Hyolk!)

Many meals I'll eat up to four eggs, and occasionally more.

I regularly eat 12-15 in one meal (but I only eat 1-2 meals a day). Probably 50-60/week. I've never had my levels checked, but I'm not dead either.

The one case in which you might want to cut back on or entirely limit egg consumption would be in the case of autoimmune disorder, as the lysozyme in them can be detrimental. Test it out and see; I've seen no measurable difference in myjoint issues when I eat them, but YMMV.

You seem to be under the impression that dietary cholesterol has some impact on blood cholesterol. They are completely unrelated. Blood cholesterol is determined through hormonal status. You could eat only eggs and have an excellent cholesterol profile.

As for whites vs. yolks, in this crowd you are more likely to see people skip the whites, since some believe the whites have harmful proteins. See this previous question and others.

There should be some kind of swap between the yolk eaters and white eaters so people can stop wasting so many eggs. – Matt Jan 11 2011 at 15:10
I'll take the yolks! – Timbo Jan 11 2011 at 16:33
Heh, Matthew, that's funny! I actually did this last year when visiting with a low-fat dieting relative. I sometimes feel bad dumping mine down the sink. Composing Jack Sprolk rhyme now... – Ambimorph Jan 11 2011 at 17:25
I started putting the whites into the trash instead of the sink, after clogging up a mesh drain stopper at a friend's house. Apparently, there were whites in the sieve and when hot water hit them.... I've offered egg whites to neighbors and no one wishes to have them, so, into the trash they go. :) – PaleoGran Jan 12 2011 at 12:18
Oh, I didn't think of that, PG. Thanks. – Ambimorph Jan 12 2011 at 20:29

2-4 a day. most in one one day = 9. In my journeys in the paleo blogosphere and beyond I've come across people eating a dozen or more a day. Eggs are so economical and there is such a variety of ways to prepare them that I don't think I could ever get tired of them. Running out the door? perfect time to down a raw one. Just cooked some bacon? Throw those suckers into the grease with some tomatoes.

For what its worth, I ate 3 boiled eggs a day last year and my cholesterol profile barely budged at all.

i guess the answer to the question "how many eggs is too many?" must be quite similar to the one for questions like "how much meat is too much?", "how much fish is too much?"... "how much food is too much?"

All I know is that starting my day off with eggs or bacon is a much better way to start than a bowl of cereal. My energy levels are much more stable throughout the day. I'm glad that I came across the paleo/primal diet when I did.

When you start clucking? ;)

No. Seriously. There is no reason to mix eggs with whites, just eat the whole thing! I know many people that eat 3 to 4 per day with no problems. Some here eat even more! If you are especially worried about it, cut them out for 30 days and then add them back in and see if there is a difference.

Sometimes I chuck the white and just eat the yolk. – gone2croatan Jan 11 2011 at 3:18

All the good stuff is in the yolk. And I agree 100% elimination testing for personal response is best. – Stephen-Aegis Jan 11 2011 at 12:45
