I know, I know, I searched already. But this is NOT an easy question because I am not just constipated. I have the methane producing bacteria that is responsible for my problems. It slows down my gut motility and it stalls the whole digestive process.
That's why most normal things that other people can use do not work for me.
This is what I CANNOT USE DUE TO SIBO:
no beets (high in sugar)
no prunes (fiber)
no aloe vera (polysaccharide)
no magnesium (citrate, oxide, glycinate) - I react to them
no Natural Calm
no fiber (no Metamucil or Phsyllum Husks - they irritate my already damaged gut)
no senna (gut irritant) or herbs like cascara sagrada
no grains or fiber (I am on SCD diet)
I can only have some natural constipation aid, preferably as foods, low-fiber, not starchy and low-fodmap.
See, I told you it is not an easy question ;)
I am fine with carrot juice (so far) but I need a lot of carrot juice - like a half a gallon or something.
Any other solutions that worked for you and were not mentioned?
@VB, Gelatin. Seriously, you're welcome. Get a high quality if you can, one that doesn't have MSG added. Also, I find that it's best to put some in a hot soup or something, but any way should do the trick. Gl, and seriously this works.
GAPS milkshake for constipation relief: Celery, apple, carrot juices. 2x a day. Break a raw egg into it and add sour cream and whisk. Will be soft on digestive tract. Adding fat and protein will reduce blood sugar spike.
Maybe try a different approach. Read this article: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/2011/04/causes-and-cures-for-constipation/
You could try a Pavanamuktasana pose? Thinking back over my vegetarian days I remember this helping me with bowel movements, although I wasn't constipated it did help with regularity. I think it would work best if you get the blood flowing a little before hand and then do it as it shunts all the blood that's suppose to be going down your leg to the digestive system momentarily.
Apart from that I think you got it covered, anything that would increase bile output as bile would increase intestinal peristalsis. I was gonna say carrot juice but you got that, and maybe some raw goats milk kefir? If you can do dairy? The MCT's in goats milk are more abundant than cow's milk and have been shown to dissolve gallstones, I'm not saying you have gallstones just that it could help the liver/gallbladder. Fermenting the goat's milk can increase the fats too.
Hope this helps some.
have you tried slippery elm? My Naturopath has recommended it to me to help with my gut and to 'keep things moving' in a gentle fashion.
I don't see a reason for it be on your list of 'can't haves'. It seems to be a pretty harmless herb. I just stir a teaspoon or 2 into a glass of warm water.
i so wish i had your problem. i can't remember the last time i was constipated.
i've noticed freshly squeezed apple juice has a very laxative effect on me.
also, the probiotic Florastor is equivalent to colonoscopy prep. VERY potent. i felt like i'd pooped out everything i ate in the last year.
Ripe papaya, maybe 1-2 cups cubed, if you can stand the smell/ taste. Southeast Asians use this and it works well but many Westerners don't care for the taste. Also the super ripened ones contain a lot of sugar so cut it up and eat it while it's still yellow, before it turns orange. It's high in the digestive enzyme papain.
