So I've been talking to Dr. Paul Jaminet about dieting, and he recommended his PHD. I told him I have candida, but he still said I should be fine eating sweet potatoes everyday.
My diet is very strict, I only eat 100% grass fed beef and organ meats, organic green leaf vegetables, organic sweet potato, various high quality fats, and then mixed vegatbales like tomatoes, squash, cabbage, etc.
I really want the health benefits of paleo, but I'm paranoid that the sweet potato will screw it up.
what do you think?
I'm working on my candida currently through my natralpath doctor and the book The Candida Cure. I'm pretty sure it says to avoid large amounts of sweet potatoes. However, I have them maybe 2-3 times a week, and I seem to handle it just fine.
From a paleo perspective, sweet potatoes are fine. They can only be an issue if there is some underlying problem regarding insulin and/or blood sugar regulation.
You might try a little raw carrot, and see if that improves your symptoms any. Carrot fiber (when it is raw) is anti-microbial, primarily for it's own good- think about how it has to grow in the ground under very moist conditions.
Frankly, most of us don't know what to say when someone says they have candida, because, like hypo-thyriod, it seems to be something a lot of people just think they have. But, assuming you do have it, you can make it worse just trying to starve it completely. If there isn't any sugar where it is, it will go looking for sugar- and there is sugar in your bloodstream. There will always be sugar in your bloodstream, as long as you are alive. Give them a little sweet potato to fight over in your gut, so they won't go trying to break into your circulatory system.
Yes. If you are doing some type of HIIT (and HIIT should be a mandatory part of the paleo lifestyle in my opinion), then a sweet potato a day should be no problem, as it will go directly to recycling your muscle glycogen stores, which I also happen to think is a healthy thing to do regularly.
Even when I'm "cutting" for a couple weeks I generally leave in one serving of "complex starchy carbs" a day (and often a banana, too) so my muscles don't get flat and I provide my muscles with energy. That is what carbs are- muscle energy. They only become a problem when you don't have muscle and you eat too much of them.
So, if you (a) have muscle and (b) use your muscles (you have to use them to have them) a sweet potato (or other starchy carb) daily is better had then not had.
Oh, and you say you "really want the health benefits of paleo." IMHO, you won't be getting all of them if you aren't doing HIIT, so, please do, and then enjoy your post-workout recovery meal.
