Today my mother came home all excited because at the garden club, she randomly met another person who was a paleo eater. The person was thrilled because paleo eating had cured her ecsema and a few other problems. And my mother was happy to inform me (like I didn't know) of tons of paleo info on the internet that I should look up immediately at "w w w dot com dot paleo...dot... something," and then she told me, "Oh and they have recipes!" My mother doesn't understand the internet, as you can see, and apparently she has no idea where I have been getting all the recipes we have already used. Hehe. But she can still eat paleo and spread the word. However, it made me wonder how many paleo eaters have randomly run into other paleo eaters 'in the wild,' ie not through paleo websites or paleo events, but just at random (and not at crossfit). How likely is a paleo eater to randomly encounter another outside of normal paleo circles? Any others had such experiences?

I also have not met any paleos in the wild. (I'm in Chicago.) But I see people with Vibrams all the time. I used to ask those people -- usually in the gym, and usually in a very friendly way -- if they also eat paleo, but I only ever got puzzled looks. This taught me a lesson about the overwhelmingly larger popularity of the minimal footwear movement. (Though there could be very plausibly be some sampling error in my case, I recognize.)

I've met some vibram wearers but they apparently only wear them 'because they are cool' or some such answer. None of the vibram wearers I have seen have been paleo eaters. – Eva Jan 13 2011 at 6:13
Also in Chicago, but in the far South Suburbs. The only Paleo people I know are at my gym and most of them haven't read any of the books and do a more half-assed version of it. – sherpamelissa Jan 13 2011 at 13:11

Same experience, stopped people(or jogged with them a ways) when spotting vibrams to find they are only kindred in footwear and apparently hate the rest of their bodies, they only love ther feet. I then stop jogging an resume my sprints/Ultimate. – Stephen-Aegis Jan 13 2011 at 13:30

I'm a couple hours northwest of Chicago. I've yet to find anyone here who has any desire to eat healthily, nevermind paleo. – kinetic Jan 13 2011 at 22:51

I live in a "health conscious" city (read: vegetarian & vegan). I see a lot of Vibrams, but usually in stylish colors, and the wearers are usually heel-striking like crazy, so I usually think that they aren't paleo. – Bristlebeard Jun 1 2011 at 2:28

Over Christmas I refused a cookie and had to explain why, and my cousin mentioned that he was paleo. It was absolutely the last thing I expected from anyone in my family.

Cool - not gonna happen in my family. – queen of the stone age Jan 13 2011 at 22:13

I would be so stoked if this happened, but no luck so far.

I haven't met any in the wild, and I'm not counting on it, either. I live in veggie/hippie mecca. Almost everybody I meet is a vegetarian/vegan or something similar of the like.

However, I know there are at least /some/ paleos in my town, since I've encountered them already on this forum. :)

In a second degree way, twice!

One of my friends went on a blind date with a guy, who started talking about how he ate, and then said he was Paleo. At which point, she talked about me. Of course it turned out we knew each other.

My mother also ran into a bunch of cross-fit Paleo's down in Oregon when she was out for Happy Hour (they were too). She ended up talking to them about me & our meet-up group here in Seattle.

I'm still waiting for the day that I run across one!

How do your conversations switch to "Are you Paleo?" Mine, at the most, get to "I don't eat wheat." That usually ends the food topic, lol...

I guess that means I haven't met any other Paleos in person!

It's usually some vague statement that starts it, like I don't eat cookies or 'that sugar'll kill ya!' or somesuch. Most people will then drop the subject but once in a while, someone will totally agree with me. Usually that will be some one in the weightlifting fitness crowd, but so far, none have been specifically paleo. – Eva Jan 14 2011 at 20:08

I'm living in Orlando FL and have met several "wild" fellow paleo dieters. I started the Orlando Paleo Diet Meetup group a few months back and have notice that there is a lot of interest, but as a previous commenter mentioned, we're not at the level of barefoot running (or vibram five finger wearing to be more precise) at this stage adoption.

Very few paleos here in in Southern MD; I did find a few months ago that a gal I know from high school is paleo, and there is another paleo gal from my area that found me on here and joined my Meetup group, but other than those two, I think the only others are the ones I've converted! There are a couple boys who work at my local World Gym and do crossfit; maybe I'll ask them.

I bought some farmers sausage from a local natural pig farmer who was selling his wares at a farmers market. I brought up paleo and was quite suprised that he had never heard of it. I now feel totaly alone.

Never met anyone in person (Edinburgh,uk) :( in the early days I tried to convert people (I call it my evangelist-paleo phase) I quickly realised that was getting me nowhere fast - people do love their grains and processed junk. So now when friends or colleagues say "my arthritis is really sore today" "I have irritable bowel syndrome" "my digestion has never been good (vegetarian)" etc I just say nothing but secretly I am thinking PALEO!!!!

I just moved to Edinburgh! Any tips for good places to get Paleo foods? I'm by the University of Edinburgh and have only found Tesco... – Leigh Jan 15 2012 at 20:23

Not randomly come across anybody doing paleo but there are 3-4 of us that all belong to the same local theatre group. Probably initially inspired by one if I'm honest but we're all getting there.

Yay Yay yay! I finally did! I rent out my spare room on airbnb.com, and have done so for 2 years. I've always wondered if I'd run into another Paleo/primal person. Lord knows I've had plenty of vegetarians & vegans.

My last guest, a woman in her mid-50's, walked past my book case and said "Oh, you're a Primal Blueprint person too!". It was fantastic. So we got to chat about that, and I was able to point out some local resources for restaurants that had good paleo options.

The population is getting bigger!!!

Never ever. All the foodies in uni are vegans / vegetarians, there's no way eating meat is trendy enough to be considered a health movement!

There's a meetup group in Sydney, I may just hop along and introduce myself ^_^ It can get lonely being the only 19 year old who is on the lookout for the cheapest lamb prices, or how to get offal when they throw it all away.

Haven't yet met a full paleo, but I was treated to a meal by some real-foodist. Only had to turn down a dinner roll. Does that count?

I have know a fair few that are aware of marks daily apple, and the like, but non of these have actually turned it into a habitual lifestyle.

Still, I'm kinda proud to be ahead of the curve with you guys and gals standing omnipotently saluting the laptop.

I just sat next to a guy reading one of Cordain's books on the train. I almost wanted to ask him about it but figured it would come off as more creepy than anything else.
