So I stopped using shampoo and soap. It has been a week and a half, and I have used baking soda and ACV every 3 days or so (I'm male with medium length, ultra fine hair) to deal with the intense greasy feeling in my hair. That 3rd day I wouldn't be able to show myself in public due to how clumpy my hair gets.
So, I think I have been using too much baking soda in the shower. I have developed really bad, itchy dandruff which I never had with shampoo (I didn't use dandruff shampoo either), so I'm going to assume it's the baking soda removing all the oil from my scalp. The BS+ACV did clean my hair extremely well, while still leaving it ever so slightly oily so it felt healthy.
I used baking soda in a cup, mixed water with it into a paste, applied to scalp and rubbed in, then worked it thru my hair. I then took ACV mixed roughly with equal parts water, and just poured it on my head and worked it thru my hair, then rinsed everything and went about rubbing my body down with one of those bundled plastic shower loofah things (with no soap, just water).
My body has handled the change fine, and I'm expecting my acne to go down as well (it hasn't flared up too bad, yet).
My question is, I have read here and on many other no poo' sites to use BS. But isn't baking soda doing the same thing (albeit more gently) as poo', just in a more natural way? Isn't it still absorbing and removing all the oil from your scalp? It takes more time for me to use the BS and ACV than it does shampoo and the occasional conditioner, so I would like to eventually cut those out altogether as well.
Whoa - if you're making a paste you're using a LOT of baking soda. No wonder your head is pissed. Try diluting it way, way down - and dissolving it into hot water first. That way it's easier to disperse throughout your hair and less abrasive, and doing much less damage to your scalp. It's not innocuous stuff. It's very drying. Some people do just fine with it, but they're diluting it.
Same with the ACV. I'm less worried about you overdoing that, but 1-1 is wasting vinegar. Do check out some no poo geek sites to see other dilutions. I tend to put maybe a half cup of vinegar in a quart bottle and fill with water.
I actually have been using shampoo bars. I couldn't ever really do no poo either, then I tried dr bronners and that didn't work. I heard about shampoo bars that a lady sells and am hooked. Even if I don't wash my hair for days, it still doesn't look greasy or clumpy. I think the website is http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/
