I am amazed at all of the shifts that have taken place in my life since going Paleo, far beyond weight loss. I am curious what other's experiences have been.
Here is my quick positive list:
-increased muscle mass
-drastically increased energy levels
-improvement of thyroid imbalance
-disappearance of depression
-disappearance of asthma
-far fewer stomach troubles
-feel far more in touch with my body
(no unhealthy cravings, respond quickly when tired, full, or sated)
So far I only have one negative since going Paleo:
-increased grocery bills
(used to buy bulk grains/beans; definitely cheaper than grass-feed meat and fresh veggies!)
How about you?
I think the biggest changes for me have been purely mental, as I haven't lost weight or noticed any physical changes on the Paleo diet, except for faster recovery times after lifting weights at the gym.
The biggest change I've noticed is that my anxiety has just ..poof!... disappeared! Whereas I used to feel panicky, depressed, desperate and like I could never do anything right, I now feel overwhelmingly positive about life. Well, I mean every now and again I get a touch of the existential angst, but in normal, appropriate measures that reflect real life, rather than feeling like I'm going collapse into a crying jag because of some imagined slight. I'm just stable all the time and I'm no longer afraid to get out there and by my loud and overbearing self.
Well, I suppose I lie about the 'no physical change' thing...I have noticed increased energy. It's not through the roof, but I'm no longer content to just sit these days like I was. I get what the Dutch call 'an itch in the bottom' and I have to get up and get something done. My apartment has never been cleaner, but I'm also more inclined to get up off my butt and go shopping, which isn't good for the bank balance :)
I have been on paleo only for about.. 5-6 months, but I've already noticed some positive results. Mostly it's increased energy and generally positive attitude to life. I've been battling with depression and anxiety and it's got better (but I don't know how much of it is just diet, how much meds and therapy). I have fibromyalgia and here I see tremendous improvement - much, much less muscle pains, general fatigue or "fibro fog". I also take fasting much better, when before I was close to passing out and was extremely weak. My stomach is much better as well...
oh, my skin! omg it's so clean and nice. I have an occasional zit once in a while (which I think might be connected with month cycle) but nothing like I used to have, when I was complaining that I was going through puberty again!
what else... muscle gain. my arms have curves :) I haven't check my blood levels yet, so I can't say anything on that. Will know by the end of July after my physical.
there is probably more. enough that I don't plan on getting back ever!
-Completely rid myself of gastrointestinal issues
-Tons of time back in my life that I used to spend in the bathroom
-Off any long term medicines I was on
-Look better (lost 30 lbs)
-Quicker, more intense workouts with more gains than ever before
-Don't get sleep during the middle of the day
I am sure there are a ton more benefits that I am forgetting, but this is a good short list!
the single biggest thing is prolly the freedom from having to eat all the time. before i just had the grazing mentality and if i had something big coming up then i had to make sure that i had fuel before hand etc. Now, with my rather strict meat and green veg-only version of paleoprimal, im good pretty much whenever for whatever. Mood in general is much better. Im never really pissed off anymore. Im more friendly in general and good deal less...crabb? I think its all because theres no more sugarhigh or sugarlow in my life. My body comp has improved a good bit, too. Going to get a lot better soon as im getting back to a decent workout routine but better already. I think even my relationship with my dog has improved as im always ready to play with him - again back to the always good level of energy thing. Overall i would say living paleoprimal is the single best change ive ever made in my life. No exageration whatsoever.
@Everyone - Those whose depression and anxiety went away are you eating grass fed and organic meats? My energy has improved but depression still gets really bad and anxiety about the same. I only eat meat, fat, vegetables, and a few nuts. However Ive yet to switch over from conventionally grown meat.
Positives; Got rid of "mental fog," Less back pain, More steady energy throughout the day, Better body composition and knowing what foods will trigger fat accumulation, Enjoyment of the sun again and nature in general, Gave me a whole new paradigm to see the world and the social problems we have, Allows me to sleep as much as I can w/out guilt, Better posture, and learned to cook :-)
Mixed bag here.
The pro still wins over the con, though. Best thing is comfortably getting into 31" pants/shorts and small/medium shirts depending on the cut.
At this point I need to re-assess, get my blood levels checked as I haven't had that done in over a year, and force myself to lift some weights. Changes of this magnitude in a relatively short period of about six months are bound to have some side effects.
I've only been paleo for about a month and a half, and I've definitely already fallen off the bandwagon a few times, BUT it has caused me to confront my issues with compulsive/binge/emotional eating I have had ALL MY LIFE. So I guess so far any benefits have pretty much been psychological. I never really realized that eating in a purer way, and being really in touch with my body and hunger, could improve my emotional well-being so dramatically! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I also don't get sleepy in the afternoons anymore, I have no troubles waking up early, I can go way longer without needing to eat (and I work long shifts so this is wonderful), and my periods are wayyyyyy more manageable.
