I've noticed that since I changed to a primal/low carb WOE, I can handle the heat and humidity much better than I used to. Humidity especially used to make me miserable and very lethargic, even sick-feeling. I lived in air conditioning whenever possible. I also found that I just 'ran hotter' overall.
Now, here I am sitting indoors working, and it's 33 degrees Celsius and humid... and my AC remains off. I'm fine just sitting in front of a fan.
Anyone else find this as well, that you handle hot weather better? Why is that?
People's bodies adjust to the heat by use of an "internal thermostat." The hotter it is out, the less heat your body needs to produce to stay at that 98.6 degree level.
Well, if you've got less fat (insulation), the heat is easier to contend with. If you're heavier because of BF%, it's going to be like wearing a coat moreso than not.
In past years, I've wanted to run the AC constantly no matter where I was. (And don't get me wrong -- it's hot here right now and I've got it on. I LIKE AC.) I was a heavier guy and the heat just felt oppressive.
But now, I can leave the AC off and roll the windows down and drive in the summer heat and enjoy it. It's still hot, and there's points where I want to melt into the carpet, but for the most part it's a lot better than it was.
Full disclosure: I'm a fall/winter guy. Bring on the skiing!
tatooedchef is right on the money. Fat people can't take the heat!
Summer is for fruit, veggies, and BBQ!
If you were going to eat breads, the time to do it would be the winter. Also, fresh grain traditionally enters the granary in the fall, just in time to survive the winter, when hunting and gathering are more difficult.
Good thread - Im here in NYC and we're hitting the triple digits. I been thinking about this idea cuz although i am indeed sweating a ton...I dont really smell. I shower daily and im a dr. Bronnor's man all the way, and then i use Aubrey Men's Stock for deodorizing: http://www.aubrey-organics.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=408
Its essentially just denatured alcohol with some fragrant oil in it. No aluminum, etc.
At any rate, i have a fairly physical job that has me moving kegs at a bar and sweating a good deal but even by the evening i just dont stink. Its pretty cool.
I am strict paleo - no grains, no dairy, no sugars of any kind. i eat meat and veg.
Yeah, I find it remarkable. I'm with Ben and live in the NE US about 3 hours SW of him. Our heat has been high enough to be in the news constantly. However, I don't find it oppressive at all. In years past, I'd been living in a freezer. This year, no probs when outside. Some AC especially at night as I love to sleep in the cold, but otherwise lovin' it! Mike
