I am currently on a medication for chronic migraine (Topiramate) that requires me to avoid ketosis. As an aside, one of the reasons I am going Paleo is to test the theory that grains may be causing my migraines, so I am hopeful that down the road I may be able to taper off and eliminate the Topiramate.
In the meantime, however, I am struggling to find enough carbohydrate to keep out of ketosis. Veggies just aren't very carb dense. Sweet potatoes work, but I'm looking for similar foods that have some calorie density to them.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Richard at FreeTheAnimal recently posted on coconut water -- not an insane amount of carbs in it, but man, they're some tasty carbs nonetheless:
I had my first taste yesterday. Color me converted.
Sweet potatos. Yams. Squash. Pumpkin. Butternut squash. Carrots. Parsnips. Onions. Beets. Taro. Celeriac. Cassava or Manioc. Jerusalem-artichokes. Chinese waterchestnuts. Potatoes. Sweet corn.*
Sweet Chestnuts. Cashew nuts. Pistachio nuts.
Apple. Orange. Pear. Plantains. Bananas. Pineapple. Grapes. Blueberries. Cherries. Blackberries. Strawberries. Mango. Papaya. Prunes. Dates. Figs. Apricots. Avocado. etc.
Just a random list of possiblities in no particular order. I realise some are limited depending on where you live.
*A more debatable option.
Par boil sweet potatoes or yams, crush them in a pan with some heat, add butter, and rosemary/thyme and a small amount of cinnamon.
Love pan roasting some sort of squash face down in a little butter/lard and then flipping over to crisp up a bit.
Also, if you have chronic migraine's your very likely to be extremely deficient in magnesium.
