I've been eating paleo very nearly 100% (maybe 98%?), throwing in IF throughout the week, for almost three weeks now. So far, going great. I'm losing fat like it is nothing, I feel strong throughout my workouts (switch between HIIT sprints, cycling, jogging, hope to start lifting weights again soon), and the problems I've had with adult acne are almost completely gone. I feel absolutely amazing, and every aspect of my life is better because of it.

However! Last night, I ate at a family event, and they're very grain and dairy dependent. It is often very hard to avoid them when I go to these events, which happen several times a week, unless I want to eat a big bowl of whatever vegetable that they've cooked up and that's it. I ate a pork chop that was unfortunately rolled around in bread crumbs and fried up in who-knows what oil, chicken that was store bought and cooked, some kind of vegetable medley that had corn and potatoes and dairy and some other unidentifiable things in it, and some cut up apples. Within two hours, my stomach was hard to the touch and painful, and an hour after that my body started acting like I'd just spent the day playing in tree pollen; runny/stuffy nose, sneezing, and coughing.

It's better this morning, though still persists lightly in the form of a runny nose and a pressure headache. Has anyone ever heard of this? Will I ever be able to eat my aunts crappy food again?

You have no basis whatever to ASSUME that Wil is gluten sensitive, Stephen-Aegis, NONE. My Naturopathic Doctor, lots of his clients, and I are clearly NOT gluten sensitive (very reliable medical test show this). We can eat all kinds of food that contain gluten. But, we are all somewhat sensitive to something else in wheat. – terrence Feb 28 2011 at 17:06

The tests for Celiac disease is not particularly reliable - lots of people have all the symptoms and do show the anti-bodies (or whatever that mark Celiac). This test is not particularly reliable. The test I was referring to is for Gliadin Ab, SIgA. I just did a search on it - there are far too many references to site, and the ones I looked at all used it - (medical doctors, medical web sites). I am also sure that my Naturopathic Doctor would not have used a test with no validity, or unknown validity. – terrence Feb 28 2011 at 18:20
Oh right, thanks, the reason I asked is that I'm sure myself and my daughter have an intolerance to something (I thought gluten) as we both get ill and scalp psoriasis when we eat wheat, haven't gone to the doctors yet as I heard the tests were so unreliable. – Carly Feb 28 2011 at 20:26

I believe that this is a common phenomenon and the answer is, "no, you will not be able to eat your aunt's crappy food again, UNLESS you revert back to eating it on a daily basis."

Our bodies acclimate brilliantly. This is a double-edged sword, as you have discovered. Eat clean--and bring your own food to auntie's house.

(I have three coolers, different sizes, for different occasions!)

IF when the menu is not convenient. Say you don't feel well and sit at the table and smile. Have a couple hard-cooked eggs before you go. Don't give in to the pressure. They mean well but they are mis-informed.

Agreed. This happened to me on vacation this past summer. Brother's birthday, so we went out to dinner, shared food, and had cake and ice cream afterwords. I honestly felt like I was sent into some other dimension of hell. When I wasn't in the restroom (leaving details out), I was blowing my nose, rubbing my eyes. I got little to no sleep that night, and woke up with a puffy face and some serious bloating.

Never again.

I'm just still so amazed that for soooo long, I went about my days in this constant state of inflammation and bodily chaos.

whenever I eat grains I swell up like a balloon and get incredibly sick, so I tend to stay away from them completely. Potatoes and corn don't seem to do much for swelling me up, but I tend to feel very fatigued after I eat them so I make note to eat them once in a blue moon. My body knows exactly what it wants most of the time, and even if what it wants is non paleo I'll eat it (like sweet potatoes) however, my body have never once craved grains... just potatoes and dairy. when I listen to my body's cravings and give it what it wants i never have any adverse effects, but its when i am not craving non-paleo things that it'll sneak up on me and smack me with a hammer.

My Naturopathic Doctor had me do a saliva test. It should CLEARLY that I am NOT sensitive to gluten. However, just like him, I am extremely sensitive to wheat (NOT the gluten in it). When I eat wheat, my gut swells and I become massively flatulent - I pass large amounts of gas for a couple of days (no burps). The Doctor does the same thing (and his tests show that he is not gluten sensitive). There are all kinds of foods that contain gluten that do NOT give me, or him, trouble - NONE!

If you want to know for sure whether or not you are gluten sensitive get the test done. Assuming you are gluten sensitive is silly, at best.

You may well want to take your own food to your aunts - maybe some good, filling fat and protein.

Here are some of the grain sources of gluten: Wheat and these wheat strains: Durum, Kamut, Spelt (also called dinkel), Einkorn, Emmer and Farro. Non-wheat grains with gluten: Rye, Triticale (wheat/rye hybrid), Barley, and Oats. I have a sensitivity to wheat (get really gassy) but I am fine with rye and oats, and other gluten containing foods.
