I bought Yerba Mate yesterday. I'll let you know if a few days if anything wacky happens on my face. I am the canary in the coal mine when it comes to any acne triggers, so this should be telling.
I'm Mateo, a Mate enthusiast based in NYC, pleasure to connect with you.
I drink at least a liter of Mate everyday.
Email me if you want more information on it, and how it can affect your body.
I was wondering the same thing about Mate & acne. I bought the organic yerba mate by 'che mate'and noticed a moderately bad breakout the morning after I started drinking it. As I am prone to acne I continued because I thought it could be something else in my diet that triggered. Just to make sure I stopped drinking it for a week. Then two days ago I started drinking it again and broke out severely. Maybe everyones body reacts differently to this tea but I am definitely not going to be able to drink anymore of it... it does horrible things to my face. It's a shame because I have read so many positive things about it.
Anyone else have similar problems?
Interesting. I've often heard that caffeine creates an acidic internal environment that can contribute to acne, but I'm unsure about the science behind the acid/alkaline theory... I know my skin problems disappeared around the time I stopped drinking coffee, but then again, that was also when I stopped eating loads of sugar, grain, and processed poison food.
I recently stopped drinking coffee because of a sensitivity to it (not the caffeine), probably a protein contained in the bean. It actually significantly contributed to my seasonal allergy issues. Regardless, I enjoy a bit of caffeine now and then so I decided to experiment with some high caffeine teas, namely Yerba Mate and Guayusa. I did a bunch of research on them and I think they are both good options; however, Guayusa seems to have more potential benefits but less supportive research.
Interestingly, yerba mate is linked (via epidemiological studies) to upper respiratory system cancers, do to the temperature it is drank at and also because it contains a high amount of PAH from the smoke drying process the leaves undergo. I wrote articles on both these teas and address the cancer issue with some scientific evidence. You can also buy unsmoked yerba mate
