I like my current physician, but he leans toward conventional wisdom too much. It's a bit hard to have a long conversation with him about the paleo diet because he's so busy all of the time. It's time for me to find another doctor. I'm looking for someone in the city of Chicago or a nearby suburb. Someone downtown would be great. I've checked Jimmy Moore's list, but there's only one doctor listed in Des Plaines, which isn't too far away from me. However, I would like to get some more names and opinions. Thank you!

I'll be watching for good answers here too - I didn't care for my last physician at all, and that was before I started paleo/primal. He's what prompted me to find a better solution for my cholesterol and why his advice didn't work! – Casey Jan 20 2011 at 19:52

Me too, my doctor was very concerned when I told her I cut out wheat. :( I checked out Jimmy Moore's list too, but I'm extremely south suburbs, so most of the doctors were a bit far. – sherpamelissa Jan 20 2011 at 20:02

And as far as I know, there's just a handful of us Chicagoans :) – Casey Jan 20 2011 at 20:43

Yeah, sorry guys, I don't have any names of doctors either. My solution was just to stop going to the doctor. But I'm also one of those people who thinks the whole cholesterol issue is total BS. Though I understand there are plenty of other reasons (and really good ones) to go to a doctor, and it would be nice to find one sympathetic to paleo. I guess I'll run into this problem eventually ... I was thinking of having some tests run on various blood things just out of curiosity. And then when I get the results I'll just sit through the lecture and nod, then walk out the door. – Paul Jan 20 2011 at 21:09

Ha, Paul. Stop going to the doctor is an awesome solution, except I have to watch my high blood pressure. There are smart doctors out there, we just have to find them! – sherpamelissa Jan 20 2011 at 21:29

Here is a list from the Chicago chapter of the Weston Price Foundation:

http://wapfchicago.com/health-practitioners/

It looks like Joseph Grasso is closest to a traditional general practitioner, as he is a DO who accepts insurance. Grasso is in Schaumberg, which isn't far for those who live in Chicago proper and own a car.

Pasted here is a list for Illinois from the WAPF website:

Aurora/Naperville Area: Jonathan Truhlar, DC (630) 499-9420, info@elanwellness.com Central Illinois: Kate Potter (309) 362-2117, potter_kate@hotmail.com Chicago: Mindi Anderson (773) 756-5900, mindiesther@comcast.net, www.wapfchicago.com Dixon: Vicki McConnell (815) 288-2556, vlmc@grics.net East Central: Deborah Chisholm (515) 339-2595, Deborah.chiz@gmail.com Northern Dupage County: Kathryne Pirtle & Olive Kaiser (630) 543-5938, kathypirtle@sbcglobal.net Northwest Suburbs Cook County: Renee Renz (847) 255-5962, wapfnwchicagosuburbs@gmail.com Northwest Suburbs Lake County: Linda DeFever (847) 526-6452, ocfever01@yahoo.com Oak Park: Gina Orlando (708) 524-9103, gorlandoma@aol.com Rockford/Freeport area: Dale & Eileen Kelsey (815) 239-1466 or (815) 239-1832

Hope that helps. Also, fwiw, I have no personal experience with any of these practitioners.

I just found out about the Paleo Physicians Network through Robb Wolf's site. There are no doctors close to Chicago listed yet, but perhaps this will yield some leads in the near future!

Yeah, darn, I was hoping there would be some Chicago docs. My parents are still looking for one. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Feb 9 2011 at 20:03
I'm going to check the site periodically and keep my fingers crossed! – Chickenosaurus Rex Feb 10 2011 at 15:48
Ha, I saw that site come along and immediately searched for a doctor near my zip code :( I too will be keeping my fingers crossed. – Casey Feb 13 2011 at 21:08

Here's an obvious answer!

Dr. Mercola has offices in South Barrington on Rt. 72. He wrote a book about a no-grain diet. www.mercola.com

(disclaimer: Lots of people have strong opinions about Dr. Mercola. I mentioned him because he is a) in the Chicago area and b) paleo friendly.)

Dr. Grasso's wife is my dentist, Dr. Lina Garcia. Their offices are in South Barrington off of Rt. 72, across from Goebberts). They are very nice people.

I am a board certified family physician in Oak Park, IL, just west of the Chicago city limits. I am a practicing Paleo adherent, and I work with Paleo, primal and low-carb patients. I would be happy to see anyone who is looking for a Paleo-friendly primary care physician. I also see children and provide prenatal care.

My Paleo Physicians Network listing is here:

I realize this thread is old, but I wanted to make sure my information was here!

Hi all! I am also a Paleo/Primal-friendly doc. My practice is the Northwestern Memorial Physician's Group and I work out of the new Lakeview location (@ Belmont and Southport).

Here's a link to my Primaldocs.com website info:

http://primaldocs.com/listing/leslie-ramirez/

After practicing traditional medicine for twenty years, I finally started introducing Paleo to many of my patients. So far it has been absolutely awe-inspiring to watch them transform their health and their lives.

Warm regards, Leslie Ramirez, MD
