Been eating Paleo but not organic or grass fed. Had a grass fed steak two nights ago that sealed the deal. But I went to Whole Foods (whole paycheck) yesterday and grass fed ground beef is $10/lb and steaks were $25/lb!!! I dont think that there are any cow pooling sources in SoCal (NorCal has a ton of them) so I was wondering if anyone knew of a local farmers market where beef or other organic meats are sold for a reasonable price. Online is fine too. I was looking at Tallgrass last night and you can get ground beef for as low as $5.49/lb but I dont know if they are a legit source. Willing to drive within reason.

Edit: I live in Santa Monica/Los Angeles

Try LaCense Beef in Montana. Check their website. They will ship anywhere in the US with dry ice. They run specials all the time. – Becky P Oct 25 2010 at 21:46

Open Space Meats (a California company) sells grass-fed ground beef for $4.79 / lb. You can also order from them online. A few local grocers in the LA area carry their meat.

Also, Organic Pastures (you've seen their milk at Whole Foods), sells beef online. Their grass-fed ground beef is only $4.00 / lb.

Awesome! Thats a pretty darn good price. Organic Non-grassfed ground beef at Costco is around that price. If its also grassfed those prices are great! – Ryan Mar 14 2010 at 22:05

Alot of great answers but Ill choose this one as the best as others around the country can also benefit from it. – Ryan Mar 15 2010 at 19:54
Organic Pastures has awesome raw dairy, but their beef is from retired dairy cows. They don't always have it in stock at farmers markets and you have to sign a special form (kinda like a waiver) to buy it. But it is a good deal! – Scott Shapiro Oct 23 2010 at 17:15
I don't trust organic pastured I don't think they are 100% grass fed – Robert Sep 21 at 0:34
Organic Valley is fed grains healthytraditions.com/blog/post.cfm/… – Robert Sep 21 at 0:44

Found this link online - http://www.eatwild.com/products/california.html

You might find a grass fed beef source reasonably close to you.

Thanks, that second link had some good leads. Going to hit up that farmers market this coming wednesday. Still open to any online suggestions that have been confirmed as indeed organic for a price comparison – Ryan Mar 12 2010 at 22:23

According to a friend of mine, a grass-fed bison rancher sells at the Torrance Farmers' Market on Saturdays.

Mmmm, bison. Might have to check that out – Ryan Mar 14 2010 at 22:03

contact brooke@springvilleranch.com for sensibly priced high quality grass fed beef raised in the foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada - almost a suburb of the LA basin. You can also get her beef at farmer's markets in Visalia, Fresno and Bakersfield or from some local CSAa.

Vons at Fairfax & Pico has a ground beef (85/15 I think) from Australia for $5.49/lb. I've also seen imports from Uruguay. It's just wrong shipping meat, or any food, that far. I'm keeping an eye out for a local source.

Hey, I'm glad you fell in love with the grass-fed variety. I was hesitant to try it, but when my girlfriend convinced me (health benefits, omega-3, etc.), I was hooked. It is delicious and, I find, tastier than the grain-fed variety. I also find it hard to come by in my area (Northeast), and thus have taken to obtaining my grass fed beef via online sources (see link for LaCense, they have become my distributor of choice). I again was hesitant at first, but the meat arrives at my door, fresh and choice cuts, and is delicious. Hope this helps!

And their ground beef is from one cow, not multiple cows – Robert Sep 21 at 17:12

We have ordered from Slanker's a couple times and have been very happy. They have a vast selection of grassfed/pastured meat: http://www.texasgrassfedbeef.com. Ted Slanker is a interesting guy to talk to if you order by phone plus "Slanker" is just a fun word to say.

Oh thank you for this! I am pretty frustrated that US Wellness requires a $75 minimum and my Costco does not carry grass fed and the nearest TJ's is not so close. Tall Grass also requires a minimum and shipping is about $25, so it becomes out of reach.

Organic pastures ground beef is the cheapest and available at the SM farmers market. Linder bison is higher quality imo but they are more expensive, starting at around $8/lb but they have liver for $4/lb.

I know this is a year old, but if you're still looking, J&J Grassfed beef is at the Saturday Santa Monica farmer's market and their ground beef is around $6 a pound. Some of their roasts run around $8 a pound, and I think their steaks and other cuts are around $10. More than Organic Pastures, but way less than Whole Foods.

I haven't tasted it yet --but I think Trader Joes sells some GF ground meat? Also I think Costco online just started selling some too.
