haha I know this sounds like a silly question, but I find when I eat paleo im never really terribly hungry..i had eggs with chicken and berries at breakfast this morning and went away for the day with friends, I ate maybe a half bag of nuts and wasnt hungry thereafter...the only thing is I ended up bingeing tonight cus I feel (I dunno why), but scared of not getting enough andyou know people actually eat quite alot (Ive noticed that 2 hrs after eating theyre ready to go again) and I was wondering how everyone deals with sitting with people while they eat their old favourites, or constantly declining food (im a teenager so this shit is difficult-and Ive only started too) and just generally feeling overwhelmed in shops by all this junk food that seems unneccessary when you think about it, but makes you feel like youre missing out on something wonderful...so many social activities revolve around food....and there are few places that are paleo-friendly :s so what do all of you do? (junk food is EVERYWHERE!) I do wanna be healthy sooo much though :s so any tips would be much appreciated (like what do you keep in mind to stay strong)
You put your big girl panties on and just do it. A response to "Oh I could never give up x" that has worked for me is, "You could; you choose not to. I eat this way for my health. How you choose to eat is just that. Your choice." (I had to use it on my own mother.) I don't badger people eating differently than I do. I don't proselytize. I eat how I eat. People who are curious will ask me about what changes I have made.
Don't know what to tell you. Except that you might be surprised how much respect people tend to have for disciplined behavior.
I don't know your peer group, but I think a lot of peer pressure, social intimidations and anxieties are self-imposed.
Be a model for others, be the rock people can go to for advice.
Ignore the snark and snipes. Swerve away from the haterz.
Keep an open mind always looking for new discoveries and evidence. Keep a skeptical mind looking for holes in dogma and "news". Don't explain your actions with irrational overconfidence. Be well read on it all.
When you are eating nutrient-dense foods you SHOULD feel full Erin! My heart goes out to all the folks who eat, eat and eat but never truly feel nourished! Start educating your friends/loved ones- when they notice you turning down processed gut-bombs and "fake food"-- THEY WILL START TO ASK QUESTIONS! Take pride in your choice and take the time to explain your rationale. If they truly care about you they will see your sincerity, and who knows- maybe they will start making some changes of their own. :-)
As for all of the junk food, just do some "modern-day foraging". Turn it into a challenge for yourself, see if you can find real food when out with your friends/family.
It may sound cliché, but you can always find strength in the fact that you are doing the right thing. Hang in there Erin!
make new friends!! ive done the eat breakfast, snack and then come home and binge thing too, mostly because I really was hungry during the day and should have eaten more then a snack but was, like you, with company and places were a good meal wasn't available. makes it really hard to keep healthy that is for sure, and ive had to ditch some friends when I realized out relationships or their sense of fun were based around unhealthy habits or things I just wasn't interested in anymore. i am generally much happier when i am hanging out with people who are more similar to me in diet and want to go somewhere and eat healthy, because, like you noticed, they aren't snacking all the time!
being a teenager is super hard, so I commend you realizing the importance of your health and also asking for help :)
Erin, think to yourself how much smarter you are than all those other people who are letting Madison Avenue advertisers (or the UK equivalent) manipulate them 24 hours a day into making unhealthy choices so fat cats on Wall Street make a lot of money.
Seriously, there is so much manipulation of food products, not just in the advertising alone but in the brightly colored packaging, the brightly colored food, the extra sugar, starch, salt, and "natural flavorings" ( like beaver anus gland) to entice you to eat these products (not produce) and want more and more so that people make a lot of money selling it to you.
By choosing to eat real, healthy, whole food, you are not allowing yourself to be suckered. Be proud of your choices, not envious of people who are so easily manipulated. You go girl!!!
I'd imagine this would be difficult if you usually hang out with a group of friends, but I was actually able to convince one of my friends to join me when I first started my Paleo/low-carb experiment. I already had the basics down, so I educated him on what I already knew. Then we kinda just learned through research and trial and error on our own. The rest of our friends figured out what we were doing, but I think it was more acceptable to them since we were both doing it, so they didn't try to make us stop or anything. They did tease us a little, but it didn't phase us. I guess I should mention that we were in a kinda unique situation: we were the cooks at a summer camp, so we were basically free to make and eat whatever we wanted. But if we ever went out to eat, we'd get salads, meat entrees, or bunless burgers. You could also just say you have an allergy/intolerance to gluten and dairy.. I don't know how socially "acceptable" that is among teens, or if they already know you don't.
Stay strong. I’ve been to plenty of family gathering and lunches with colleagues that are based on eating a lot of bad foods – just say “no, thank you,” or add “I’m not hungry.” because that’s probably the truth, and even if not, it’s a little white lie that’s easily forgiven. It can be awkward at times, but the culture of overfeeding needs to stop somewhere – and it shouldn’t interfere with quality time spent with good family & friends.
A better question is why would you want to be like everyone else? What's so wonderful about being a clone?
Would you like to be sick all the time when you're older, like everyone else? Or would you rather be strong and healthy?
What's your health worth to you? And are "friends" really friends if they don't understand and refuse to support your choices rather than learn from them?
