Gave into having two pieces of high quality chocolate this week, and got glutened by it somehow.Noticed that my craving for starches/sweets went through the roof the day after-my body was almost screaming for it.I know it's not the sugar doing it-I've had cane sugar twice since going paleo, and it didn't make me feel great, but it also didn't make me want to eat everything starchy I could get my grubby little paws on.Anyone else experience this?

Maybe it's just a diff kind of sugar or the extra flavoring with the sugar or some other factor that spiked the carb cravings. What are the ingredients in the chocolate? You are assuming it's gluten but you'd really have to try a few trials with other forms of gluten to have any chance at reliably narrowing it down that much. I personally find that sugar plus fat sparks my biggest carb cravings, like with cake, which I think has the added influence of the wheat, along with the fat and sugar. Sugar by itself is second. Fat alone does not spark carb craving. I can do occasional dark chocolate as long as I don't get carried away. Really, I think all sugar initiates a bit of carb craving and/or desire to eat more in general, but it's just that with some sugary foods, the effect is stronger and with others, it's weak enough that I can get away with it in moderation. |

Actually chocolate can have gluten, lots of dark chocolate has "traces of wheat" from being on the same manufacturing line as wheat products. For people who go paleo and avoid gluten so long, a small bit of cross contamination can indeed can a "glutening" with harsh penalties. Make sure you're getting gluten free chocolate, better if it is listed on the bar. If now make sure you call the manufacterer especially if it's made in Switzerland. In Europe they call stuff gluten free even if it contains trace amounts. The USA is different. |

I think sugar is addictive; we can feel that "hit" from the sugar, and then when it wears off, our receptors scream, "more!!" and this is so heightened when you go off sugar for a while and then on: major cravings result, as well as other unpleasant withdrawal feelings. Ugh! So not worth it. Hope you feel better! : ) |
