Since lately I haven't been able to hit the gym as much as i would like to, I was wondering if there were any inexpensive heavy lifting ideas I could do at home. I have sets of 3, 5, and 8 lb Barbie-bells but those don't cut the mustard. What do you suggest I use inetead that would be heavier and that I could do at home?
If you're not into push ups, pull ups, handstand push ups, dips, or doing deadlifts using the rear bumper of a car (ideally not yours), then you can probably find a decent olympic weight set on Craigslist relatively inexpensively.
You can definitely fill a duffle bag with sand and do some sandbag cleans and squats. Also, you can get a basketball, cut into it, fill it with sand, and use that just like a medicine ball.
You can pick up a kettlebell pretty cheap (25lb is $35 at walmart), or even just a weight lifting plate (25lb is $29 at walmart). (I've been thinking of getting a plate myself, just to slide under the couch and have handy.) Kettlebell you can do kb swings, squats, snatches, turkish getup, etc. With the plate you can do squats, thrusters, lunges, etc. Just get on youtube and google "kettlebell" or "weight plate."
If you are looking to not purchase anything, you could use a small child for some of these. :) Or a bag of sand. Jugs of water. Bags of salt.
