If the paleo diet has little or no sugar in it, do we still have to worry about cavities? And, if not - does that make fluoride toothpaste unnecessary?

I worry more about flouride! – henny Mar 13 2010 at 14:20

I have not used fluoride toothpaste in many years. I highly recommend against it. Baking soda and a little coconut oil makes a simple, effective toothpaste. – Suzan Mar 13 2010 at 14:56

No. To my knowledge, it has never been proven that there is any need for fluoride in human nutrition. The studies purporting to show that fluoride protects your teeth were deeply flawed, and funded by aluminum and fertilizer companies that were getting sued for releasing fluoride from their manufacturing facilities. In one of the most successful marketing campaigns in all history, they managed to convince people that fluoride is beneficial. But that is a complete myth.

Fluoride causes bone cancer, especially in boys, osteoporosis, thyroid problems (it was once used to damage the thyroid in an attempt to cure hyperthyroidism) and many other health problems. Most European countries no longer fluoridate the water.

Reference: Fluoride Action Network.

"You have been led to believe the fluorine makes teeth harder. The fact is, it actually makes teeth softer." -- George Meinig, a founder of the American Academy of Endodontics

The most important things for preventing tooth decay are: eliminate fructose and get enough Vitamin D3 and K2. Fluoride has nothing to do with it.

I use fluoride-free toothpaste because I too worry about fluoride (and remove it from my water). I've tried various brands; Jason Natural Cosmetics Sea Fresh Sea-Sourced Toothpaste seems to be my favorite at present.

I was about to ask you how to remove fluoride but I decided to make it a top-level question instead: paleohacks.com/questions/2077/… – ScottMGS Mar 14 2010 at 4:21

Unnecessary.

My town fluoridates the tap water, grrr, so I stopped using fluoride toothpastes about a year ago. My teeth are fine. I use Weleda Salt or Ratanhia toothpaste which is very expensive in a store like Whole Fuds but which can be purchased from amazon.com for $2-3 per tube.

I also try to avoid flouride -- Tom's has a flouride-free toothpaste

I stopped using toothpaste entirely since it is the act of brushing that cleans your teeth NOT the toothpaste. I just brush teeth, gums, and tongue twice as long and with warm water and my mouth feels super clean.

If I feel particularly scungey or feel the need to sweeten my breath, then I use a wee bit of baking soda (or grab a mint leaf out of the garden!) ;)
