I am a 25 year old female (woman? girl?). I quit smoking nearly a year ago and picked up some healthier habits. Among these are exercising 5 time a week, watching what I eat etc. Few months back I gave up on my guilty pleasure of diet soda. I have never been overweight (1.75 meters, 60 kg) but ever since I started eating Paleo i gained 2.5 Kg!!! in 2 weeks! I am truly horrified by this new change to my body, clothes don't fit quite as good and I find myself frustrated - I really don't deserve this after all the hard work I've put in
What am I doing wrong?
your advice and support will be much appreciated.
***For those not using the metric system: 5.6 feet, 132 pounds + 5.5lb gain in 2 weeks (OMG)
You are likely not reacting well to a specific food (or family of foods) that you recently introduced into your diet, and are bloated and are retaining water. This may not be a full-on allergy, but you may be sensitive to some foods. Can you let us know what the new foods in your diet are?
Even if you were eating 24/7, it is extremely unlikely that you ate an extra 19,250 calories in only 2 weeks to gain 5.5lbs of fat; and it's as unlikely (i.e. impossible) that you gained that much muscle. But clearly, the weight has to come from somewhere: my guess is water/bloating.
Hey girl! I've been following paleo for 7 weeks now and have gained 6lbs! i am having the same experience. I mean i feel great, but i look bigger as in muscle and a little fat. I know there is no way i put on 6# of muscle in 7 weeks or gained a pound a week? cause i was keeping track of my calories. My guessing was i was retaining a lot of water because i have not been drinking enough. So thats what i have changed in my diet, more more water and I'm going to see if that helps. Are you drinking enough water?
I did put on weight when I went full paleo (still, within the norm, about 5 lbs, currently 5'9", 164, will go down to about 156 in midsummer - used to be 159-151). Your body works more efficiently, puts away the extra energy, and all those tablespoons of coconut oil in the morning yogurt (not to mention parmesan snacks and increased tallow and lard consumption) add up. Healthy, well fed people do prosper, and I feel in great condition.
Running or playing soccer (anything that forces your body to lose weight) will make you lose some weight, but currently I am mostly biking and working in the garden. Specially swimming, which I do in winter, you can swim until you are blue in the face, you will not lose a pound.
