I have had dry skin since birth.... keratosis on my legs, bum and arms... I developed generally dry flaky skin on my face when I hit puberty and started moisturising to relieve the symptoms...I'm 18 now and the keratosis and the flaky skin is still there :( I was just wondering have you found eating paleo has helped dry skin? any particular foods that have helped? Also, I was wondering If I should continue washing my face with facewash and moisturising or is this just a marketing ploy that is serving me no benefit? Any suggestions? Thank you :)
Have you heard of The Skintervention Guide ~ Purely Paleo Skincare by Liz Wolfe, NTP? It's jam packed full of great and helpful info about paleo diet/skin care connections and solutions. It's separated into three parts: Nutrition, Digestion and Body and Skin Care.
While the foods you eat are important to your skin health, how well you digest and absorb the nutrients from these foods is even more important. If you’re eating within a Paleo Framework, but your gut is unable to absorb nutrition from the foods you’re eating, then the food really doesn’t do you much good. In Part Two, Liz goes through digestion step-by-step, from tip to tail, troubleshooting along the way. This part of the book is useful for everyone– skin troubles or no. Healing your body with whole foods is the first step toward overall health– not just healthy skin.
Once you have a solid background in the foods that support healthy skin, and how to heal yourself so that you can digest these foods, Liz goes into a comprehensive description of everything from oil cleansing, to hair coloring to teeth brushing in Part Three– Body and Skin Care. My favorite part about this section of the book is that Liz outlines three levels of care– which level you choose depends on whether you want to use the basic ingredients (baking soda, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar), add some extra care (like essential oils and homemade balms) or add some “traditionally cherished ingredients” like clays, and treatments.
I read it and found it extremely eye opening! Eating paleo coupled with the tips in this guide has completely eliminated previously dry, flaky skin. It looks a little gimmicky, but I found it informative and useful none the less. Worth a read!
whats helped the most:
eating a TON of animal fats, egg yolks, offal, ox tails, and taking a omega 3 supplement or fermented cod liver oil. butter seems to be one of the best if you can tolerate it. limiting or avoiding nuts, seeds, vegetable/nut/seed oils and butter.
being properly hydrated.
using a skin brush before a shower, never taking hot showers or very limited soap use, if at all. mud based soaps(sounds crazy I know!) or goat milk are the most gentle. using a wash rag instead of soap.
using olive oil, coconut oil or jojoba as a lotion(which isn't always necessary anymore). dr bronners also makes some very gentle lotion that does not seem to encourage the skin to over/under produce oils.
but yes, I used to have very dry skin, crackling on the fronts of the legs, tight skin on the lower back that itched, lived in a very dry high altitude climate. once I cleaned up my diet and really got it dialed to very basic meats, offal, green veggies, occasional eggs plus some supplements, my skin is the best it has ever been, superp soft, supple, no flakes. its taken a few years to get it to be consistently good, but there is no turning back.
so much! this was one of the unexpected effects of paleo for me. i don't know what it is - elimination of gluten grains? inclusion of saturated fat? limiting rancid oils? i don't know, but i'm happy.
Saturated fat. Saturated fat. My and my partner's skin has improved dramatically since adding butter, eggs, and heavy whipping cream to our diet every single day.
Oh, and the eczema on my hands? Gone. From a mixture of saturated fat and gluten, I do believe.
ive never been one to have dry skin but i can tell ya that after going vegan for a few months i really saw a difference in my skin. It became dry, flakey .. blemishes wouldnt heal. After adding animal products back into diet .. particularly eggs ( which i was indeed craving like mad ) my skin improved nearly overnite. just my n=1 ..:)
