when i eat any type of fruit or vegetable (except things like broccoli/califlower, avocados, carrots, yams, or mangos) i get diarrhea
kale, collards, mustard greens, parsley/cilantro, spinach, pretty much any leafy green and berries/grapes are the main inducers of this issue.
what could be causing this?
My first guess is you can't tolerate oxalates. Search oxalates on here. Here's a list:
Second guess is FODMAP intolerance:
Having spent a lot of my life eating mexican food, I always assumed occasional diarrhea was par for the course when eating good food.
I wouldn't be so quick to assume someone has an intolerance. No offense, it just seems like most people on a paleo diet suddenly self diagnose themselves with intolerance they never noticed before. Yes real issues can surface with any diet, but to cut our a large number of foods, because you pooped a little isn't right.
If you're drinking a lot of water, and eating a lot of leafy greens, and fruits and moving a lot I could see diarrhea as what happens (I ate a lot of kale and drank tons of water yesterday and same issue with me today). Diarrhea is also caused by excess sugar (fruit etc) and bacteria (do you wash the greens and stuff well before eating??
Greens are coated in cellulose, which is natural, and we don't digest it. It's why we could eat wood, but wouldn't benefit from it. With these food, maybe try steaming them and then put them though a magic bullet before eating them. See if it's actually them or you simply aren't breaking them down enough before consuming. I know that I have a similar issue recently, so making sure I really concentrate on chewing them well and cutting them fine can help.
Contrary to supposition, I was not a SAD consumer. I was vegetarian for 6 years. Not a carb vegetarian, either. I ate mostly vegetables and fruits and legumes. Now off the vegetarian diet/lifestyle I find I am unable to tolerate ANY fruits or veggies in any form, cooked in any way, or raw. My stomach will distend immediately to the point that I am in actual pain, breathing becomes labored, my distal joints (especially wrists and ankles) will swell, my energy levels plummet and I will be constipated for days. Or, conversely will have bouts of diarrhea that last for days. My throat feels like it is closing up and unless I take an antihistamine, I will soon not be able to take a deep breath. Laying down seems to exacerbate the symptoms. What do you make of that?
DW would get bad stomach cramping and gas with fiberous greens (interesting that it's not broccoli with you, but other greens instead!) and adding a little organic kefir changed that up. Maybe it's your gut flora.
I cannot digest lettuce, apples, corn, peas, raw carrot, and many other fruits and veggies. If I eat a meal high in these I just poop it out in the same condition I chewed it. If I ate only a sald during the day I would poop that thing out in the exact condition, except chewed. It's kind of amazing really, and I'm clearly getting no nutrition from it. I pretty much have about 90% of my poops as diaharia and fruit and veggies always cause it. I've only been diagnosed with heartburn and take a daily pill. I can't find any info on the web and my Dr doesn't seem to think its a real problem.
Try incorporation yogurt, kefir, and the occasional bubbies or other kosher sauerkraut and very small amounts of the offending foods every day or two. Good chance it will do wonders.
Digestive enzymes are a great supplement too. Just don't get hooked.
You cannot get "hooked" on enzymes. You absolutely need them. As we age, our bodies don't produce them as much and they're necessary for digestion. There are different types. I take pancreatic enzymes but there are plant based ones, as well. If I go more than a day without taking them, I don't digest a thing and I'm sick for days. Go to a good natural health food store and talk to them about the best ones. And the probiotics well help a great deal, as well.
