I am at work and did not bring a lunch with me today. There is a grocery store around the corner from the office. What can I get for lunch that does not require any cooking and stay Paleo? BTW, this is a newbie.

Here's some ideas:

  • Hard-boiled eggs and smoked salmon.
  • Almonds and raspberries.
  • Uncured sausages or sandwich meats.
  • Pre-made cobb salad (if you're doing dairy).

Beware of wheat and preservatives in the grocery-store roast chicken.

And MSG, gluten and soy in the chicken! – Rock_Paper_Shirley Jan 26 2011 at 17:27
And, apparently, sucralose. As I learned from the roast chicken I picked up last night. -.- – Kaz Jan 26 2011 at 23:19
I would say the first of your four suggestions is ok, the rest are prob not. Almonds as a lunch is high in Omega-6, cobb salad has no protein and a meal isn't a meal without protein. I suppose the uncured sausages or sandwich meats could work if they are of good quality. Just skip lunch, it will do much more good. – RaiseFitness Jul 13 at 20:56

rotisserie chicken

canned tuna or sardines

Sardines are scary sounding if you've never had them before but they're delicious. – Oranges13 Mar 25 2011 at 16:36
Agreed. Also, smoked herring in a tin turns out to be quite good. – Allan Jul 13 at 20:48
becareful though, a lot of sardines are canned in soybean or canola oil. – Chelsea Jul 14 at 1:17

They should have some good lunch meat in the health food section, grab some of that, an avocado, and some mustard, and make little rolls out of it. You can add cheese if you're doing dairy.

Ok, so how did I do?

First thanks everyone for your answers, it was very helpful

So I went to the store and did a little hunting and gathering and came back with the following.

1 small head of brocoli 2 tins of shardines in olive oil 1 avacado and a small plastic container of blueberrys.

I ate everything but the blueberrys, too full, I will save them for a snack later. Also washed it all down with a big 32oz jug of water.....

Fruit, Veggies, Smoked Salmon (look for hidden sugar),Sardines, Tuna, Salad mix, Coconut oil, Butter, Dark Chocolate, Olive oil

Sky's the limit, really. You only need enough to get you back home to cook a feast :)

Some grocery stores will steam fresh fish for you right in the fish department. Grab a lemon and whatever veggies you can buy in a lunch size portion (or will keep well enough to take home) and see if they have any individual portions of real butter (if they have a big take out section, they might).

I love tinned tuna over mixed greens with dill or mint and a squeeze of lemon juice. I eat this almost everyday...

I normally go with a salad. Most grocery stores have some sort of a salad bar. I just make my own with as many veggies as possible and hard boiled eggs or grilled chicken or tuna (whatever is available)...then normally I buy a bag of almonds and/or baby carrots or blueberries as a snack later. I can eat salads without salad dressing though...

see if they have applegate lunch meat (or lunch meat without nitrates). http://www.applegatefarms.com/products/

Roast Chicken

Pork Rinds

sardines in olive oil or water

almonds

raw fruit/veggies

these are the items I usually pickup - or I go out to lunch with coworkers and get burgers w/o the bun, or meat with salad, burrito bowls (no tortilla) without beans or rice, etc...

  • Grab a bag of fresh salad, throw in a tin of salmon/tuna

Or my favourite, get some thin sliced roast beef from the deli counter. Use it as a tortilla and fill it up with some liver pate or cottage cheese or sundried tomatoes or olives or all of the above. Mouths watering.....

The deli roast beef (w/mustard) is my lunch at least 3 times a week. Just check the ingredients to make sure they haven't added the hidden nasties like "flavorings" and MSG. Boar's Head brand is great if it is available in your area. – JCB Jan 27 2011 at 17:27

For fast food, at the very least, I get a can of tuna and some mayo. Mix and munch. Not perfect (mayo is usually soybean oil), but it fills the belly and tides me over.

Coconut milk would be better than mayo. – gilliebean Jan 26 2011 at 17:53
I've not used it with Tuna before. Will have to give it a try. However, I find the current stuff a bit unwieldy (they're big cans). Plus, good luck finding it at the local 7-11... :) – James Jan 26 2011 at 18:08

I substitute sour cream for mayo when making tuna salad. Haven't tried coconut milk. Hmm... – ScottMGS Jan 30 2011 at 5:27
kraft makes an olive oil mayo – Debbie Mar 29 2012 at 0:26
I enjoy my testosterone too much to even think about a soy product. – RaiseFitness Jul 13 at 20:58

Here's what I had today from the Safeway near my work:

Two hardboiled eggs from the deli section One small avocado One medium carrot

When I've been in a pinch before I've had a can of tuna and an individual serving of full-fat Greek yogurt (this was not Safeway -- I can never find full fat Greek yogurt at Safeway).

For reference, I'm a smallish female, so I don't need TONS of food.

I can't believe nobody mentioned shrimp! My grocery store always has the pre-cooked kind at the seafood counter; they're great as an emergency meal.

Take it as an opportunity for an IF intermittent fast. Let your body become fat-adapted.

I keep a tin of nuts, canned Chicken and Tuna in a pouch at my desk for emergencies. the corner mart is closer to me than the grocer so I'll grab a couple hard boiled eggs if they have them to tide me over until I can get home and get a proper meal.
