I'm currently (as of last week) attending veterinary school in the caribbean. I will be here for about 2.5 years at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.
There are perks. I have a lot of food allergies including wheat (I'm celiac), dairy, egg, chicken, shellfish, and I typically vomit fish. However, I have AMAZING and CHEAP and ORGANIC produce available here at amazing prices!
Basically, there are plenty of mango, banana, plantain, pineapple, coconut, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes (sweet and white), eggplant, and a myriad of other foods available! Also, there are a lot of greens and interesting new green vegetables. I just tried a caribbean pumpkin, which was amazing mashed with a mango!
Fresh spices like ginger, turmeric, and nutmeg are also available very inexpensively.
The downside: My two forms of protein, beef and pork, are very expensive. I've heard goat is cheaper here, so I have to further explore that option.
Is getting a lot of my calories from coconut ok? Is adding more calories from fruit ok?
I'm 5'1.5", and I weight 142 lbs. I would like to lose the remainder of the 30lbs I gained at the end of last year moving back home and eating non-paleo foods when I was unemployed and at the mercy of others diets in my house! I didn't eat wheat, just- potato chips, candy, etc.
Is eating red meat 2-3 times/week alright? I'm going to try the fish and see if I can tolerate it!
What is your best suggestion? There are also nuts available. I eat some home-made almond butter with my fruit!
PS- I have been making my own coconut oil, which is amazing!
Beyond researching meat availability and experimenting with local fish I can suggest:
1) Use protein supplements, maybe up to 25 grams per day. I personally like:
Tastes awesome, dairy free (..I cannot tolerate dairy either). I just use a teaspoon's worth a couple times per day. A 5 lb. container should last six months.
2) Try to eat one or two eggs per day.
You can probably get by w/o eating all that much animal-based protein, and you should be able to lose weight.
Restricted access to protein in my opinion, just might be a blessing in disguise. I realize I'm in Paleo Land but my attitude toward protein is that less is more. I don't read up on every little study but my own gut instincts (which may be wrong) suggest that our ancestors weren't that successful at obtaining animal protein on a regular basis and that our bodies might actually perform better on a lowered animal protein intake. I am not saying that animal protein is bad, quite the contrary - Nothing is better.
But your access to organic produce in conjunction with great sunshine closer to the equator puts you in a great position to maintain or build your health.
With regards to beef etc... being sorta expensive, I too would give some other meats like goat a try. And perhaps carefully add in fish and see if your allergic reactions and sensitivities might only apply to certain ones or prep. Point is to log everything and experiment.
