Is Flavored Coffee, such as Cinnabon flavored or Chocolate Hazelnut Coffee acceptable on paleo? My guess is No.

As an MD its not paleo.....not even close. The chemicaladdictive are highly inflammatory to the liver and stimulate IL6 and NNF kappa beta and worse yet.......the flavoring stimulate leptin receptors on your tongue and it causes an insulin spike even though there are no carbs to induce it. A big pass. |

That stuff is usually flavored with some fairly nasty chemicals, often referred to as "natural and artificial flavor" so that you dont freak out by all of the crazy names. Also, they usually use the coffee rejects for this stuff anyway. Coffee beans that are sub-par and cant stand on their own as quality coffee go in the "flavor this crap" bin. Find a good roast that you like, and you can always make your own flavors to add to it. Homemade vanilla extract is just vanilla bean and vodka. |

The flavoring is artificial garbage, so I vote no. |

I assume you're talking about coffee-flavoured beans, which I guess is a no. But if you're talking about sauces and syrups, let me tell you this: I work at a respected coffee bar and that stuff is NOT natural. We've got some pretty expensive sauces/syrups, but it's all nasty stuff. For instance we've got a white chocolate sauce, with which I used to make a superb Moka Latte (when I still drank milk), of which I used to think it was pretty okay stuff. It turns out these are the ingredients: Corn syrup, sweetened condensed skim milk (skim milk, sugar), sugar, water, cream, cocoa butter, salt, soy lecithin, natural flavor including vanilla, preservative: potassium sorbate But if you want to spice up your coffee, try cacao, cinnamon, coconut cream/milk, heavy cream, honey, or even some grassfed butter (which seems like a strange combination, I know). |

i dont think coffee is all that paleo, so seems like hair-splitting. if its without sugar, then i guess its fine. i dont drink flavored coffee myself, so i dont know what it tends to be flavored with. i DO put cinnamon or cardamom in the grounds before brewing for flavor. |

Yet again I say, its all about what works for you. First, you should at least know what the "flavoring" really is. If you don't, its probably best to avoid. I consider myself paleo, but I still have coffee, dark chocolare, dairy and diet coke (working on that one!). Some people can do dairy, some can't. Nightshades are a problem for some people. Too many carbs are a problem for some people. You have to figure out what works best for you - how strict you need to be to feel good and healthy - and how much you can bend the rules to make your life manageable and fun. My first rule is: Don't eat what you don't like. Fortunately, I love most paleo food! Thank god lima beans are not paleo!!! |

I confess. I love flavored coffee beans. I organic on line. How bad can it be? Mighty tasty - coconut and blueberry flavored. Seems respectable and certainly makes me happy! |
