For me, the last several months have been rife with self-experimentation. I've done minimal meat, Nightshade-free, Paleo-zone, high-carb paleo, and now I'm looking to try all-meat or minimal veggie. I'm wondering what other's experiences have been and what advice you may dole out before I dive in head-first. Thanks in advance.

I've been on a major plateau lately and am going to try this next. – Carl_Stawicki Jan 27 2011 at 18:13
I'm about to do to a carnivore diet experiment (with dextrose PWO). To avoid making another post, is there any evidence that an all meat diet promotes testosterone production? Tim Ferriss kind of hints at it in the 4-Hour Body and it made me curious. – sinn10304 Jan 27 2011 at 20:57

The only time I run into problems is when I add too many vegetables into my life.

Ditto. I've thought about adding variety through vegetables, but am coming back to the idea that says if something ain't broke, don't fix it. – Ambimorph Jan 27 2011 at 17:49

Meat only for 15+ months, here. No other variation has resulted in such good health for me. Make sure you get plenty of fat.

What types of fat? if It is meat only? – Todd Jan 27 2011 at 17:56
what kind of meat mix, and how much? – qualia Jan 27 2011 at 18:02

The kind of fat that comes on meat, of course! ;-) I do have some coconut oil or butter on occasion. For types I go through different phases depending on what I feel like and what's on sale. I eat almost exclusively conventional, for financial reasons. I still think it beats non-meat, health-wise. I eat mostly beef, with some pork, lamb, turkey, chicken, and fish. I tend to eat a lot, probably a couple of pounds of meat a day. I'm not sure, I don't track, I just eat according to hunger. – Ambimorph Jan 27 2011 at 22:48

Oh, yeah, and I eat liver every couple of weeks, when I get a hankering for it, and eggs now and then. – Ambimorph Jan 27 2011 at 22:50

I've been doing Paleo for a while, but trying to lose some weight and it's not coming off, so switched to 50 carbs or less which is essentially all protein and fat. After a couple of days, the weight is coming off finally.

Just had this same experience... Those last few pockets of stubborn fat are slowly disappearing. Congrats to you, btw. – Todd Jan 28 2011 at 0:27

About a year all meat, now I'm more of a "dirty carnivore" (since Aug' 10), in that I put salsa on my ground beef and don't brush off the onions if I get a burger.

Felt fine most of the time. If you don't eat enough, you'll know, and it's easy to not eat enough because the diet is so satiating. Like Ambimorph said, make sure you get plenty of fat.

I've been on an all meat diet for the past month and what I can honestly say is that i'm never hungry! I eat once maybe twice a day, and I consume a lot of fat (butter, cream, coconut oil, animal fat etc..) My muscle mass has stayed the same and I do no exercise due to an nagging knee injury. So far i'm really enjoying it and I love the fact that it's very price efficient, being that I only have a few items to purchase in the store.

My diet consists of any and all grass-fed beef (gotta love Panama) occasional pork and chicken. I guess you could say that I follow Dr. Harris quite closely; so far it has worked for me. I use many condiments and occasional onions and peppers for taste. Good luck on your new endeavors and keep us posted on how you look, feel and perform.

Cheers from Panama

Is grass-fed (good quality) beef easily available in Panama? That would be good to know for future trip planning – Aaron Jan 27 2011 at 17:45
In places where they can't afford factory farms... – Dan Oct 3 at 3:09

What do you eat exactly? I know that standard muscle meat is lacking in certain nutrients. How often do you eat organ meats, such as liver and sweetbreads? I'm considering going to a mostly meat version of Paleo, but I'm not a huge fan of some of these other parts of the beast.

Just as muscle meat may be lacking in certain nutrients, so is vegetable matter! Liver, marrow, suet/tallow, sweetbreads, heart and tongue and other such "guts" ought to be eaten as well. All meat or high-veggie, organ meats are a big part of complete nutrition. – Tim Rangitsch Jan 27 2011 at 18:19

If you are constipated from eating meat, its most likely your stomach is not producing enough acid like mine. I take betaine HCL tables with each or after each meal and that helps. also you can drink lemon water or apple cider vinegar water to increase acidity to help process the meat. After I unclogged with the betaine hcl, i still felt backed up. i had read something about making sure you get enough salt in your diet. I started eating bunch more salt and the constipation has gone away. At least for now.

I'd have to say that the same goes for my husband and myself. We are never hungry and all our systems are working perfectly - with NO fiber! Diet consisting of eggs, bacon, beef, pork and chicken, coconut oil, butter, etc. Gotta love Paleo!!

I have done zero carb quite a few times, and frankly I love it. I do find I get bored after awhile and crave a few veggies or a new dish, but usually for at least a week I am fine. I feel VERY clear headed and almost similar to when I have fasted in the past. I think if I did not cook for my husband who desires a lot more variety I probably would be more meat only then I am.

When I see All-Meat, I think the start of the Dukan Diet. One of the guys at Howstuffworks.com tried it out and tracked his info (interesting read). I started off with it, and it worked ok for me, but I found some of the cycling a bit unlikely. I settled on the more Paleo diets because it felt better for me, but the Dukan probably would end up ok.

Oh, and for me, all-meat = fierce constipation. They recommend oat bran on that diet to offset it, but it was a bit marginal for me in terms of how it worked out. I wasn't taking in the fats I do now, so that could change the situation.

Yep, it's all about the fat. Keep the fat up and you won't have any constipation problems. – Alan Feb 3 2011 at 10:43

Doing all meat messed with my kidneys, so while some people do well with it, it's not for everyone.

In what way? What makes you think the diet caused the problem? – Ambimorph Jan 27 2011 at 22:52
Unless you had pre-existing kidney problems it is very unlikely an all meat diet would affect them. bodybuilding.about.com/od/bodybuildingfaq/f/… bodybuilding.about.com/od/nutritionbasics/a/… – Alan Feb 3 2011 at 12:14
