2 weeks ago I gave up fruit / my after lunch 500 calories of hot chocolate and chocolate. Before that I worked myself to 3 regular meals a day (and I have a small baked potato at night which helps my mood/seratonin levels). This felt brilliant and always has in the past as if I do not have that regularity I end up binge eating all afternoon and evening so the discipline of the tiny "fasts" between 3 meals seems to set me straight (mentally as much as physically). For many women (and some men) this is just as much about the mind as the body.
Earlier this year I had got rid of the chocolate and replaced it with nuts and raisins (which was of course healthier) but the quantities were 500 - 1000 calories a time on top of my meals (I can always eat for England).
So 2 weeks ago all that went. I think it is the first time in my life I have not eaten fruit. I have binged eaten fruit very often. It is a trigger food for me as much as chocolate and where one person when not hungry might eat one banana I would eat 6 or I would vast amount of cherries and strawberries etc etc.
Anyway I am not eating fruit. What is interesting is that I feel as if I've been punched in the face or post viral or tired (even though I sleep 8 - 9 hours a night from about 10pm). I am hoping this will go. It seemed to go after about 5 days but is back.
(I need to lose about 28 pounds or a little more although I am more interested in eating healthily for life and having stable blood sugars and feeling happy and calm).
I do not want to try a bit of fruit in case a bit becomes a lot and soon I am back on the fructose hit bandwagon again.
I hate calculating calories and charting things and believe if I just eat clean/paleo I will feel better which has worked in the past. However chairing a rather dull course this week I spent some time typing in a typical day's food into sparkpeople tracker.
What it came up with showed 41% carbs (all the veg I like - squash, swede is high in carbs),36% protein and 32% fat. Below are the foods in case anyone is interested.
I suppose the big question for me if I want to lose the weight is can I bear to reduce the carbs. If I reduce them I get sad, unable to function, thinking about food all the time (I suspect that is more a female than a male thing as my suspicion is for 1 m years men hogged a lot of the meat and women were left grubbing for and eating a lot of roots and eating more often as they weren't out hunting and hence we differ).
I am really really pleased I am eating clean/paleo again. I could substitute the brown basmati rice/wild rice which I do not have much of anyway just a very small handful 3 times day with baked potato/sweet potato which I always eat with skin. (I hate white rice). Or I could just keep on as I am. I think I lost 2 pounds in the last 2 weeks which is better than nothing. In January I gave up my carbs for a few days and lost lots of weight quickly but felt so awful I might as well have been incarcerated.
I have set reasonable targets of 7 pounds a month (in the UK most of us work in stones - 14 pounds in a stone). I have also this week started some exercise - cycling to the gym, some hills and bikram yoga which I love but have not had time for much recently. I think that has helped with today's weight loss - as I actually got out of breath which seems to be a key for me losing weight. Get out of breath a few times a week. On both times I cycled I came back here and ate a swede before my dinner despite usually not eating between meals which I presume was my body needing to replace the lost energy.
So my question if anyone has read this far..... is - is the absence of fruit and dried fruit what is making me feel a bit headachey?
Should I take that as a sign something is wrong or stick it out? I suspect it is telling me that this is working and ought to hold on rather than start after 2 weeks introducing the foods I binge on - fruit, raisins etc.
Should I be trying to eat few carbs or swapping the brown rice to sweet or baked potato?
(Foods I eat below from earlier in the week although I will not do that again - it is just too boring. Also my basal metabolic rate given mostly lack of exercise and age (over 50 just) is so very low I'd have to eat like an anorexic to lose 2 pounds a week so will probably stick with 1500 calories a day below which is very very little for me. 2500 would be more a normal day before I started this. I have always eaten a lot, usually mostly eaten good foods - I don't drink or smoke and I am hardly ever ill - I just came off the paleo/clean eating path about 2 years ago and put on about 30 pounds in the process which does not look good).

Well, it could be low-carb flu, but it also could be the calorie restriction in general. 7lbs a month is a lot to aim for. 4lbs per month would give you a little room to eat a little more.
You should be able to tell how much carbohydrates matter to you; when you eat them, how quickly to you find yourself eating again? I found if I ate a banana I'd be eating again in two hours, but if I ate brisket at the same time of day, I could go hours without thinking about food.
Maybe it's a bit like when someone stops drinking coffee - you might just be having withdrawls. I also had t cut out fruit completely (I know the 6 bananas in one sitting thing - or 250 g of raisins...) though I am able to stop at just one piece of HOMEMADE dark chocolate. (The flavor is deep and rich, and it's pricey to make - this might help me stop, too.)
I would just stick to it for a while longer - doesn't it take something like 21-36 days (depending on who says it) to create/break/change a habit?

I kept waking up and felt hot at one point as I do in the rare occasions when I am fighting a germ and my body is trying to boil the germs to death so may be I just have a cold I was fighting and it feels a bit better today.
I am going to continue to cut out all fruit and chocolate and nuts and I might try to cut back the brown rice and potato a little bit in case that helps with weight loss.
Bikram yoga was so much harder yesterday and 2 years ago purely because of the fat on from front getting in the way.
However there is nothing as important to me as eating well and even if I never lost a pound eating this way (paleo with some brown carb or clean or whatever we want to call it) always makes me feel so much better. My mind seems faster too in the 2+ weeks since I gave up chocolate.
