So, I have been on a paleo diet for about 6 months, I have noticed that when I decide to splurge and eat something non-paleo, I get sick, I mean really sick. I'm nauseated, diarrhea, stomach hurts, brain fog for days, etc. I never used to have this severe of side effects before I started eating paleo. Does this happen to everyone? Any way to mitigate this?
Me too. I believe the technical term is: f'ing with a homeostasis system.
Your body is a wondrous thing, and can tolerate a lot of crap. All it really wants to do is be is consistent. When things swing on direction or the other it gets pissed off.
If you regularly consume crap your body will get used to it and not react so violently.
I am dubious about the standard "it was always making you that sick but you didn't notice" model. Your body is good at digesting things it's used to. When you don't eat something very much, you'll reduce production of enzymes or lose gut flora for digesting those things. There are other possibilities, of course, but I wouldn't discount this one.
Me too! It was my anniversary this weekend and I treated myself and had a piece of cake on Saturday in the afternoon and some onion rings at a restaurant with my meal in the evening.
I've been off work all day yesterday and today with awful stomach and head aches and I'll leave you to imagine the many trips I've had to make to the bathroom :/ Also I've been exhausted and asleep for most of the last 48 hours :(
I keep thinking its my imagination, but basically EVERY time I eat something 'naughty' this seems to be what happens.
sigh Its a great incentive to keep eating clean though!
I feel lethargic, bloated, gassy, increase in keratosis pilaris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratosis_pilaris) and worst of all, my hay-fever goes nuts!
I have written about it here: http://www.thebarefootgolfer.com/2013/06/24/seasonal-allergies-revisited-vitamin-d-to-cancer/
