So, I came across his blog series on bacterial overgrowth and was wondering what you guys thought. Could this be the real reason behind heart disease or is it not that simple?
The only downside to this series is this same website is selling probiotics.
Bacteria overgrowth is kind of a vague term, especially considering the multitude of different bacteria, beneficial and otherwise. In traditional diets (ie: high sugar/carb) the "bad" bacteria gets fed better and crowds out the more beneficial gut flora. Of course, doing the opposite can help. Courses of antibiotics can throw off your balance as well.
When it comes to heart disease, there have been studies that show that the presence of certain bacteria strain are present in arteries with plaque. These are the same strain that causes plaque on the teeth. The misconception is that if you don't floss, this bacteria gets into your system and then into your heart. That may happen, but in a healthy body, the bacteria should pass into your system. This can be affected by leaky gut issues, not getting enough prebiotics, other health issues, too much sugar, etc.
Just popping a probiotic pill isn't going to cure an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, but it doesn't hurt. I periodically will take a course of probiotics to keep things balanced, and try to get some unsweetened fermented foods when I can, like kefir.
