I'm in search of a good travel mug for hot coffee and teas. I'd like to avoid plastic and so am seeking recommendations/brands.

Bonus points if:

  • Dishwasher safe
  • Fits in a car cupholder
  • Not easily spilled
  • Microwavable (to reheat drinks or soups)

I got a Bodum travel stainless French press and it's one of the best travel mugs/container I've ever bought. It's double wall, very nicely constructed, has a perfect grip, and I get to have my sediment and drink it too :) ... actually, the mesh is fine enough that I don't get any sediment. It took a few tries to figure out how high I could fill it (without getting grounds in it) but it's terrific. Slender so fits in a cup holder and very solid. No drip, seals nicely, comfortable mouth. The lid is plastic, but doesn't strike me as the kind that is going to leach chemicals (since that would cause it to break down easily). Macy's doesn't seem to carry them anymore, but there are plenty on ebay

I wouldn't pay more than $30-33 for one. It was $30 at Macy's without shipping.

These are so cool-looking!! – familygrokumentarian Feb 2 2011 at 2:36
They are! I love the way it feels in my hand - it's just such a high quality piece. And of course, you could fill it with regular coffee and not use the press anytime you wanted (but I love French press). I usually won't spend that much on small convenience items, so this was a splurge, and well worth it IMO! I wish I had it in orange. – Rock_Paper_Shirley Feb 2 2011 at 3:10
OMG. Rock Paper Shirley. THAT IS THE MOST AWESOME THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. Thank you! Buying right now.... just have to decide on color! – sherpamelissa Feb 2 2011 at 16:13
:p Just so you know, as I mentioned, there is a bit of a learning curve to using it and I've been pressing coffee for many years. You can't fill over the point where the steel curves outward or the plunger will force grinds up around the rim and into your coffee. however, I've gotten around that by scooping some of the grinds out before pressing. And it even has a silicone bottom so it's not slippery - they though of everything, those happy Swiss people!!! – Rock_Paper_Shirley Feb 3 2011 at 3:21

I'm not a fan of steel, so I searched forever for a ceramic travel mug that was at least 12 ounces. I love the plain white ceramic mug that Starbucks carries. It is a great hand feel, substantial and just perfectly heavy enough. Great cupholder size as well. For me ceramic is heaven! There are lots of ceramic choices on amazon but Starbucks was the only one I could find that was 16 ounces.

I use contigo travel mugs. They are steel double wall insulated with a plastic top that has a button on it to drink, making it spill proof. It has a small bottom so it fits easily in a cupholder. It keeps drinks hot for hours! They say hand wash only. But I put mine in the dishwasher regularly and they have lasted years so far. I definitely recommend them to friends.

If you like Klean Kanteen (and don't mind spending a pretty penny) they have an insulated steel bottle. You can get it with a regular cap or a "cafe cap". They come in 12, 16 and 20 ounce sizes.

Klean Kanteen makes good stuff but I don't have one of these, yet, so this is more of a notification than a recommendation.

I have the 40oz and 27oz classic KK's. If I were to get a travel mug, it would definitely be purchased from KK. I am a bit of a fumbler but have had no damage to the bottles regardless of multiple drops. – Timbo Feb 2 2011 at 19:02

If there's a World Market in your area, check out these mugs: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10982593

Ceramic mugs with a silicon lid and sleeve, completely dishwasher and microwave safe. Less than $10!

It was a great day when I discovered these :-)

I've seen some like this in different places. Do they keep the coffee warm at all? – Dale Feb 2 2011 at 16:22
Oooo there IS a World Market a bit of a drive away. I would make the trip to get one of those, though! :) – familygrokumentarian Feb 2 2011 at 17:58
I'd say it keeps your drink warm for an hour or so. I've never thought about it that closely though. It's probably not as good as an insulated mug, but it works for me! – Lauren Feb 2 2011 at 19:18
The double walled stainless steel mugs from Starbucks keep my coffee warm for HOURS. I actually went to a concert once and when I came out my coffee was still warm, not hot, but warm. – sherpamelissa Feb 2 2011 at 19:34

I got a great one from a Caribou Coffee shop- it's metal, with a plastic lid and a rubbery grippy band around the middle; not microwaveable of course, but it's so well-insulated, you probably won't need to reheat your drink. The lid is pretty leak-resistant. It cost maybe $22 and was worth every penny! I think it's supposed to be hand washed, but I put it in the dishwasher once or twice a week, and haven't seen any ill effects.
