Hey everyone, I am a teen girl on the paleo diet, and have been on it for abut 4 months now. I am about 5'1 and 78-80 pounds. I'm not really trying to loose weight, unless you all think I should? I love eating whole, nutritious foods and I love the way I feel when I do. What I am stressed about is cheat meals. Sometimes, I just really crave something and really do want it! I know everyone says there is always a paleo option to satisfy your craving and blah blah blah, but I Reaallly want some Coldstone ice cream! Suturday was my nephews first birthday party and I have half a cupcake and half a piece of cake, which I consider to be a cheat. Me and my mom are going to a big shopping mall and they have a coldstone there. When I eat cheat meals, I never feel the side effects that some people mention they do, and I always make sure that the cheat fits into my macros. But will it throw me off the paleo track? I don't go wild when I cheat and crave more and more, the craving actually goes away for a while and I'm satisfied. Will it harm my body and cause weight gain? I know we will be walking around the mall a lot so I'm not too worried about gaining, but I just want to be sure it won't make me unhealthy, especially since I had a cheat meal on saturday. I always eat very healthy at home and when I go out, and i excersize almost everyday, but sometimes I really just want something really naughty! Please help me to decide!
Eat what makes you feel good. Don't stress about the little things, and definitely don't stress about your weight. I fell in love with Paleo because it gave me more energy, motivated me to exercise more, and it just made sense. And while I did find I lost some weight, that was never my reason for starting or continuing.
There are lots of voices and influences telling you and all of us young women that we have to look a certain way to be accepted or valued in this world. Don't buy it for a second. Love your body and all the wonderful qualities that make you who you are. If you ever need a kind reminder of that, beautyredefined.net is one of my favorite websites in the whole world.
Also, by all means enjoy your Coldstone's, but definitely give coconut milk ice cream a try!
There is no "paleo track" you need to follow and no "cheat meals." Stress is a known precursor to a number of degenerative diseases, and if "cheating" on a made-up diet causes you undo stress, than listen to your body and treat yourself every once in a while. Your cravings indicate your brain is attempting to satisfy a desire, whether physical or psychological. If you are eating a whole foods based, balanced diet that is low in sugar, oxidized fat and preservatives, you are following recommended dietary guidelines and will build a healthy foundation. There are no "cheats." There is building a healthy foundation, minimizing stress, and enjoying life. The paleo diet is destructive when followed religiously, and dangerous when followed blindly.
A healthy weight should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
No, you def don't need to lose weight at 5"1 and 80 lbs. My teens (a girl and a boy) eat Paleo foods at home with a little bit of rice and lots of dairy. When they travel with their clubs or eat out with friends (2-3 meals per week) they eat whatever is available/ they want, pizza, subs, ice cream etc. They are both tall and slim with good muscle tone. As long as you are 80% Paleo overall, I would say you are fine.
Cheating shouldn't stress you out. If you want the ice cream, then eat it. Just don't indulge in the stuff all the time. Isn't there an 80/20 rule?? You can cheat 20% of the time? I'm not sure.
If you eat whole, real foods most of the time, don't get addicted to cheat treats (like I do :(), and don't get side effects from SAD food, I don't see any reason to stress about an occasional cheat treat. Just eat real, nutritious food the rest of the time and enjoy your occasional treats.
