I have been Paleo now for just over a week and could not feel better. However my blood sugars have really changed. I am Type II diabetic and am now worried about low blood sugars. Before going Paleo, I was averaging around 180 (even on medicine and insulin). Yesterday my fasting blood sugar was 97 and this morning 77. I have a call in to the Doc about lowering my insulin dosage.
Now I am worried about going hypoglycemic and was wondering what I should have on hand.....
I'm a type I diabetic and what I do is check my blood more frequently. If you are low then eat something carb, protien, and fat. I generally try to avoid getting to the point where I need a fast acting glucose. When its not avoidable, I carry organic raisins in the little boxes. Dehydrated fruit has a higher fructose and glucose load. The little boxes are portable and make sure I don't over consume fructose. Small amounts of organic juice or milk may be other options. Snickers and processed foods are not necessary as there are plenty of paleo options.
Same thing you kept on-hand before. Sugar, juice, snickers, whatever you used. You want it to bring up your blood sugar fast, and sugar is the fastest. I don't think there is a "paleo" answer to this one. Don't play arond with it. You did the right thing by consulting your doctor, especially if you are on insulin. That makes it a different ballgame.
You should definitely reduce your metformin or whatever diabetic meds you are on. Many former II and some I diabetic folks have weaned themselves off of their meds and now have fasting BG readings in the morning on 95 to 100. The fact that you are down in the 70s strongly suggest weaning yourself also.
And it is just absolutely amazing that the mainsteam medical community treating diabetics do not alter their patients diets to paleo before sticking them on medicines. I just big pharma has got their claws into the physicians in to believing that diabetes must be treated with only a pill.
I think you are seeing good advice that seems to contradict but actually doesn't. If you are going sorta low, but it's not an emergency, I agree some potato or fruit would be a healthy addition and then keep an eye on yourself to make sure it is working. But if you are very low, dropping fast, or feeling shaky, ie potentially an emergency, then it's time to pound down some pure glucose tabs or something very very sugary, like sugary drinks, table sugar, etc. You want to go straight for the big guns if it's getting dangerous because going too low if far more dangerous than a few doses of sugar will ever be. Once you get yourself sorted out and balanced on the healthier diet and lessened medication, then you probably won't have to worry as much as you will get a routine down again. But if you are taking insulin, my advice would be to always have a few glucose tabs on you just in case. With any luck, they will just sit there unused, but sugar doesn't go bad so that's just fine!
I was diagnosed Type II six months ago and have religiously avoided anything sweet. Last week I fudged and drank about 1/2 cup orange juice. My BG shot up from 110 to 180 in a matter of minutes. I now keep a small bottle of it both at home and work.
Read Dr. Berntein. As a Type 3...I was Type 2 then burned out betas to push me to Type 1(Insulin Dependant). Use glucose Tabs and glucose gel. All the fruit etc are too impresice and will spike you too high then you are back on the insulin rollercoaster. 4 grams tabs bring me up EXACTLY 20 points. Break in half...10. 2 tabs...40. See how good I am getting at math? Exactly. Nothing brings you up faster than glucose. Carry your tabs in your pocket, purse, car etc. The idea is to never sky high again because you overshot on carbs. Bernstein's Law of Small Numbers...big numbers, big mistakes, small numbers, small mistakes. I only make small mistakes now. Whew.
