I am new to paleo, day 4 as a matter of fact, and so far I am feeling pretty good about it. I am not a huge milk/dairy person as it is so I don't feel like cutting out dairy is going to be an issue for me. I am also trying to go as 100% paleo as I can, although I am still not 100% sure on the do's and don'ts.
Anyway, here are my questions. I bought coconut milk for my coffee, which I like the taste of, its just I feel like I have to use a lot to get that "creamy" consistency that my creamer used to give me. By doing that, my coffee isn't really hot anymore. I also forgot to bring some to work with me today so I ran across the street and I found Coconut creamer in the dairy section. It does say dairy free, but it also contains dried cane juice which I am assuming gives it some sweetness, and it gives it 1g of sugar. I like the fact that it acts more like my old carnation FV creamer, but is it really a bad choice?
Next question. I found the Terra sweet potato chips. They are REALLY good, but contain canola and/or safflower oil. How bad are these for me? I am not a sweets kind of person but put a bag of chips or anything crunchy and salty in front of me and I am going to eat the whole bag. I feel like this is a better option for me than regular potato/tortilla chips, but I am not sure where they have the bad oils in them.
And last question....does paleo work for loosing weight if you are maybe doing it 90% right? the parts that I would be doing wrong are basically what I have asked about...using coconut creamer, which I feel like is better than using milk or cream, and buying the terra chips in place of the other chips...
Thanks for your help!!! Aimee
In addition to "evaporated cane syrup" this creamer is COLORED WITH TITANIUM DIOXIDE (they use this in PAINT!!!), DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, PEA PROTEIN, CARRAGEENAN, GUAR GUM.
Doesn't sound very paleo to me.
I don't care whether cavemen had it or not, it's not REAL food.
Don't rely on fake crap and then call your diet "Paleo". It's just NOT.
I just use heavy cream in my coffee, but don't get the coconut creamer, get real coconut cream if you want that option, it won't have the added sugar of the creamer, and it will be creamier also. As to the sweet potato chips, my recommendation would be to get out of the habit of snacking. If a snack fills you up, then you weren't really hungry to begin with, you were probably just eating out of bordem, habit, or some other reason. Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full. Eat a wide variety of vegetables and meats, eggs, some fruit and nuts, and you will be fine. As to the losing weight, focus on the right foods to fix your metabolism and hormones and the weight will begin to correct itself. Make sure to get some exercise in there also such as some heavy lifting and HIIT. Good luck.
I can't tolerate milk and don't like coconut milk. I use coconut cream (coconut milk that's sold in cans) in my coffee or green tea every morning. In a perfect world, I wouldn't snack but I've always been a grazer so now I eat fried pork rinds, nuts, terra chips, plantain chips, fruit, and frozen fruit bars. Of these, I gain the most weight from the fruits and frozen bars because of all the fructose but they're good.... As for canola oil concerns, I just try eat as little as possible and limit it to these snacks. I never cook with it anymore.
I think you can still become healthier on 90% Paleo. Better than 0%, right? Do the best you can and if what you're doing isn't producing good results then go stricter.
Big fan of Terra chips here, especially the Original (a mix of taro, parsnip, yuca, etc). But I think of them as a "cheat" because of the type of oil they use. So I wouldn't rely on them as a staple. I did write to the company telling them that the Paleo movement is big on these kind of starches but not on those unhealthy grain oils, and urging them to make a version using a different oil like coconut, olive or avocado. Encourage you to do the same!
I personally use heavy cream in my coffee. I don't like the taste of coconut milk :( I drink almond milk sometimes but mostly I'm a water or coconut water drinking girl. As for snacking, Paleo actually curved that for me. I don't snack anymore lol. I didn't feel hungry throughout the day like I use to. Now that I do IF, I don't even think about it. I relied on snacks mostly because I was bored or it was an easy grab. An easy grab that did nothing to curb my hunger. I don't even crave the things that I use to. The chips you are talking about would definitely be a cheat to me. So as long as you're eating them wisely, you should be fine.
