So Oprah did a special on being Vegan. Can any good come of this?

end of the world haha. Good tagging. – mari Feb 5 2011 at 21:56
didn't she already do a "vegan cleanse" a few years ago? – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Feb 5 2011 at 22:04

On the upside, teaching people to get away from the SAD diet is a good thing. On the downside, teaching them that animal consumption is utterly ethically wrong is problematic.

Further upside: I was thrilled that this video was linked below. http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Good-Food-Video hurrah for Joel Salatin

but this video is a better view of Polyface farm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIbXU5iR2P4

So many of the Evolutionary Eating folk that I know tried vegetarianism or veganism along the way, perhaps veganism is the 'gateway' drug away from SAD and towards Paleo?!?

Once your mind is open to trying new things, it is hard to shut it again.

Oprah's bounced around so much weightwise, she's not exactly the role model I would be looking for dietwise...

Absolutely, that's what I thought. – Carly Feb 4 2011 at 15:52
It's because all the diets she tried, were not paleo... – Stephen-Aegis Feb 4 2011 at 16:50

alot of us bounced around before we arrived here. – luckybastard Feb 4 2011 at 17:33

But that's our POV from the "outside" as it were. The problem is that a lot of her followers (and I used that word deliberately) are almost fanatical and will do most ANYTHING she does or approves. It doesn't matter to them about the yo-yo weight loss or different diets that she has been thru. To use an old cliche, if Oprah says jump, they all just say "how high". – JCB Feb 4 2011 at 19:42

Maybe she'll start feeling terrible then have to explain how her health suffered as a result of her Vegan ways. Yes, and then switch to Paleo.

This is exactly what I was gonna answer. – Stephen-Aegis Feb 4 2011 at 16:49
Hey - there's hope for everyone. Even my militantly vegan (for his health, not ethics) brother-in-law has gone back to eating cheese because it makes him feel better. Next step .... – JCB Feb 4 2011 at 19:44

It takes one extreme to propel you to the other. So many paleos used to be vegan, vegetarian or raw foodists. The willingness to experiment with diets is admirable.

Ain't that the truth! It was the constant weakness and sickness on my vegetarian diet that drove me to the arms of Paleo. :) – Kaz Feb 5 2011 at 23:03

Great... looks like my Mom will now go Vegan.

Ugh, can't wait for that phone call.

You kid, but if Oprah went out for grassfed beef on her show, the rest of us would be totally screwed... – James Feb 4 2011 at 20:51
I wouldn't as I live in England and have a grass fed beef farm 20 mons up the road :D :D – Carly Feb 6 2011 at 18:48

Perhaps she needs to invite Lierre Keith to come on her show.

Like that's really gonna happen! – Curmujeon Feb 6 2011 at 17:30
I know, wishful thinking on my part! I wish she would try it for a month and give an honest report. One week isn't going to give her much of an idea of the reality of eating that way. – Chickenosaurus Rex Feb 6 2011 at 21:17

"Tomorrow morning I can wake up and eat an egg and I am so, so, so excited." From the video

I guess it could get people eating more real foods. That would be nice.

From a completely selfish point of view; because Oprah seems to have so much power, this could get people even more scared of meat, paving the way for lower meat prices for us all!

it's when those people all get together and legislate to make eating meat really expensive like they did with cigarettes that's the problem. – MikeD Feb 4 2011 at 15:52
Or demand lessens so farms close and supply falls off, inflating prices. – Stephen-Aegis Feb 4 2011 at 16:50
You guys ruined my unrealistic dreams. :( – Phoenix Feb 4 2011 at 18:45
Exactly, MikeD. I can see them wanting to levy a "meat tax". People like that just plain scare me because they can't seem to refrain from trying to impose their beliefs on everyone else. – Helen Feb 6 2011 at 19:01
