Well, this is an awesome question, but I am having gut trouble for sure. I made this post http://paleohacks.com/questions/21129/fatter-and-feeling-worse-on-paleo-than-when-i-was-vegetarian#axzz1CsPztKmn about a week ago.

So, after doing many things years back like candida cleanses (with no sugar, even fruit), liver cleanses, and eliminating wheat and then all gluten, my stomach was doing well. I was regular - two BM's a day for the last two years or so. I haven't had nuts for the last 6 days, as several people thought that could be causing my weight gain and gallbladder issues. I am still having gallbladder pains, and had one attack after trying pork bacon.

Since switching to Paleo from vegetarian, my digestion was definitely moving slower. I expected this for a few weeks after introducing meat, but it's been longer than that. I haven't pooped more than a rabbit sized pellet in 5 days. I've drank Nat Calm (double sized dose over usual amount), black coffee (which I rarely drink since it bugs my GB, but it ALWAYS has done it for me before), and triphala. I'm just causing a lot of rumbling in there. I have awful, awful smelling gas, and stinky sweat.

This week, I haven't been getting enough sleep. I'm a single mom, blah blah blah. Overworked, etc. My car just broke down, so I've been walking to work, and generally get a lot of exercise anyway. Lately it's been too much though. I've been getting less and less sleep. Last night was about 4 hours. Yes, I sleep in a pitch black room, and use f.lux. I have to get up for work at 4:30 am. I am not tired until midnight. I have the option to sleep earlier, but can't fall asleep. I used to go to bed around 9, sometimes 8. I never eat past about 6. If I drink tea, it's at breakfast. So seeing as this week, I'm just pooped, is my body not wanting to poop?!

Last two days food: Wed: 1 egg, scrambled. Turkey bacon, 3 pieces, uncured. 1 banana. Chocolate square (yes there's some caffeine in one square, but minimal). mulligatawny stew (green veggies, burdock, coconut milk, beef stock, and grass fed beef) - two bowls. Roast leg of lamb with collard greens.

Thurs: Mango. Beef Jerky. (was not that hungry for breakfast, as I feel so damn full!). Elk pattie with plain salad and one avocado and one cup mulligatawny stew. Coconut curry with flank steak and veggies.

P.S. - no stomach cramps, just lots of rumbling.

From your last question "fatter and feeling worse" and this one it seems like paleo is not making you feel very good at all. Perhaps you need to re-evaluate this path? I don't think anyone should continue to do something like this if it is making them miserable. I'm sure your vegetarian lifestyle was healthier than that of a lot of SAD people so if you are really fatter, sadder, slower and less able to poop on Paleo maybe go back to what you were doing before when you felt better.

Or if there are some really solid reasons that you want to be Paleo maybe you could ease into it a little slower. Maybe eat mostly what you used to eat as a vegetarian but take out grains and add in a little meat here and there.

I think everyone has to listen to their own body and if yours is telling you that paleo (or at least the version of paleo you are doing) then modify it till it feels right.

Oh and prunes work really well for me :)

Ah, the magical prunes! I started this diet to help my long suffering gallbladder. Even though it has been much better in recent years, it's still diseased. I'm conflicted as to what to do. But, I think I have to give my body a rest from this, and then as you said, ease into slowly again. – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 6:01

When I'm stressed or anxious, I find my bowels completely freeze up on me in a panic, like a deer in headlights. I actually have to like, Lamaze-breathe on the loo before my body will let me go.

Do you have time to go poo? I know that sounds like a weird question, but one of the things that sometimes makes my bowels selfishly hoard my movements is the feeling that I won't be /permitted/ to go due to time constraints or some other exacerbating factor; it's like it's shoved on some back-burner of biological behaviors (yay for alliteration!).

I find that quiet time with green tea (promotes gentle peristalsis) helps wonders for that, sometimes combined with deliberate, meditative breathing, to ease things along.

Good luck. :)

I do have time. It's just like a brick in there though! I know some yoga moves that help, which I have kinda forgotten about until you made me think of it. I'll do them before bed tonight. – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 2:30
This might be overshare, but I also squat on my toilet. Lining up the pipes, so to speak, helps considerably. Have you tried abdominal massage? It helps coax the movement down the intestine, I believe; I've tried it before and it offered relief. :) – Kaz Feb 5 2011 at 3:45

Yes, I've been rubbing and rubbing. And with a question like this, I don't think overshare is a problem. :) – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 5:57

I find that every time I go camping, my bowels get reallly slow for the first 4 days. It's actually really convenient when you are out in the woods, far from a bathroom. At home, I will move some solid material about twice per day, but once I hit the road, pitch the tent, hike all over the place, etc, really just the minute I hit the road, there will be no more bowel action for about 4 days. I never feel sick or uncomfortable thought, but have often wondered about it. My best guess is that all the physical activity and change of lifestyle causes my body to shift resources to other things like brain and muscles. I tend to push myself very hard on camping trips and go to sleep beat each night. I have wondered also about dehydration but often we camp in the winter when it's cold and there is no sweating so seems unlikely my need for water would be super high. Anyway, I'd say yes, it's very possible that lifestyle changes can effect body bowel movement to a large degree.

I actually know people who often go days without 'going.' I am not sure if I know for sure how healthy or not healthy this actually is. I know it is a kind of lore that this is supposed to be really bad for you, but for myself, if I don't feel uncomfortable, then personally I don't worry about if I have 'gone' recently or not. I figure it will come out when it's ready to come out. And it always does. I'd probably be more worried if I ever had any serious problems with that but I just haven't.

I had similar problems until I realized that paleo is supposed to be basically a vegetarian diet with meat and no grains. The majority of your food should still be vegetables, especially lots of leafy greens. I used to forget the veggies and just do meat and fat and low fiber veggies like sweet potatoes. I had lots of digestive issues until I focused on eating plenty of raw vegetables. My main focus now is on eating vegetables (many raw or fermented) and supplementing the veggies with meat and whatever fats I want. Spinach is my default since it goes in everything (eggs for breakfast, salad or greens for lunch or dinner).

Good luck

Sounds like she eats a lot of vegetables already and plenty of cultures that eat very little in the way of vegetables don't have this problem. Fermented vegetables are def the way to go though IMHO. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Feb 5 2011 at 2:00
Thanks Khaled. Raw spinach is actually quite bad for you. I have really lowered my intake of raw veggies lately, and gone to cooked - but without sleep, perhaps the fiber from raw veggies will do the trick! Do you do sauerkraut or kimchi type stuff? – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 2:01
Oh, I have been drinking my homemade kombucha, but am low in the fermented dept otherwise. – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 2:02
Thanks for answering my previous questions Melissa. I am trying to stick with Paleo, but am having a rough time! – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 2:03
Maybe try to eat some germinated rice or soaked brown rice? Eventually your bacterial population should be in charge of the moving brigade, but that might help in the meantime. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Feb 5 2011 at 2:27

Jerky wrecks my stomach sometimes. It's too dry or something? Also coffee messes me up a lot. Try drinking a big bolus of fat like a can of coconut cream and see what happens...

You might also want to try a probiotic and lacto fermented vegetables. Having pickled carrots every day keeps me regular. I have a huge bucket of them in my fridge, I got the gallon from Real Pickles. Tasty and healthy!

I'm not a regular coffee drinker, but when I do drink it, I usually go to the bathroom 10-20 minutes later. I know how to make kimchi - I'll get on it this weekend. Do you think I should try the coconut milk first thing in the morning? Because the coconut milk curry didn't get things going. Thanks! – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 2:30
How about really really really spicy curry? Vindaloo has been known to have a laxative effect. I think for the coconut milk, just have a plain coconut milk in the mornin gmight work. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Feb 5 2011 at 2:39
Does your jerky have any additives besides the salt needed to preserve it? – justanotherhunt Feb 5 2011 at 3:31
Had super spicy thai cocont curry tonight. Not Vindaloo, but we'll see! – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 5:56
Nope, it's clean jerky joe. And a rarity in my diet. It was all I could get down that morning besides a mango. – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 6:02

Kaz makes some good points. I myself have experienced bowel movement (or lack thereof) issues in the past. As I advised to your earlier post, stay with the probiotics. I think you might need to eat a little more, especially the green leafy stuff and good fats like EVOO and perhaps some coconut. Coconut oil before bed always makes me go the next day, usually more than I prefer so I don't go that route unless I'm desperate.

My main answer is you are not only too pooped to poop but you are too stressed out as well. I'm not a science guy, but if you are anxious about it, it ain't going to happen. "Stage fright" can happen even if no one else is looking. Stop with all of the "remedies." Eat green leafies (much cooked spinach has been treating me well lately) and cover them in EVOO. Eat some meat. Nature will take over if you let it.

I really am not in the mood to read your whole question.. but I like the "hook". "Am I too tired to poop?" sounds funny. That is all.

Well, yeah. It's a funny question, but not a fun time! – valkyrie Feb 5 2011 at 1:59
