I understand that these are a domesticated version of a once larger fruit; as are dates - I can understand avoiding dates, as they simply are too sweet. But Olives? Loren Cordain suggested they should be avoided to a certain extent - why?

...Olives? Loren Cordain suggested they should be avoided to a certain extent - why?

Cordain tells people to avoid olives because they are usually cured with salt and he thinks salt is unhealthy. However his book The Paleo Diet contains two recipes with olives. Both recipes tell the reader to rinse the olives to remove salt.

ah ok, thank you. I don't hold his position on salt anyway, not that I eat loads either. I think I will carry on eating olives. – oliverh Feb 7 2011 at 11:56
Thanks for the checkmark. Judging from his recipes Cordain eats them too. :) – Rob from ketocure.com Feb 11 2011 at 9:34
Salt has been vilified as causing high blood pressure and hypertension--but for every study that suggests causation, another fails to find even a correlation: scientificamerican.com/… – ErinLenhardt Feb 11 2012 at 18:47

I thought it had something to do with the fact that they have to be processed. We have tons of olive trees here but you can't just pick them and eat them or you'll get sick. Or so I've been told. I personally haven't tried!

According to wikipedia: Freshly picked olive fruit is not palatable because it contains phenolic compounds and oleuropein, a glycoside which makes the fruit too bitter, although not unhealthy.[32] (One exception is the Thassos olive, which can be eaten fresh. – Travis Culp Feb 7 2011 at 19:30
i'll have to learn to identify the Thassos olive tree – oliverh Feb 7 2011 at 20:19
or, you can try your hand at curing them. There are many ways to do this. – The Loon Feb 2 2012 at 14:54

Black olives are apparently high in acrylamides.
