I was about half way in my 30 day Paleo challenge and doing great! Lost a bit of weight, my energy level was up, AWESOME! Out of no where I ended up getting very sick and in the Hospital with a Bacteria Infection in my Colon (Colitis). Would Paleo cause me to grow a new bacteria in my body to infect my colon. I am better now after my five day stint in the hospital and would like to get going again on Paleo but scared. Was my infected colon some strange side affect of Paleo or just a fluke? Thanks!

I have Ulcerative Colitis for 8 years and tried lot of different medication (corticosteroids, biological treatment) and it stopped helping and I was not far away from surgery (colon removal). Right now I try ketogennic diet and it seems to help me and my pipes are getting better. It will take some time, but I believe sacharides are not good for us. Maybe focus more on ketosis... And look at book Life without bread.

Just wanted to say you're on the right track (I think). I did an all-meat diet for a year for Crohn's, seems to have worked. Lutz was a guiding light initially for me as well. Good luck! – pfw Feb 7 2011 at 22:09

I wouldn't think so unless you were eating contaminated food. I'm not a doctor, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before.

My wife and I are in the final week of a 30 day challenge too and our pipes are working better than they ever have (for both of us).

Coincidence. Thought experiment: Imagine if you hadn't gone Paleo and ended up in the hospital with a bacterial infection. Would you blame the philosophy behind your diet or random bad luck/contaminated food?

Paleo isn't going to make you unlucky, and if anything should bias you towards eating better food, thus making you less likely to get a random infection. Chalk this one up to bad luck and randomness.

Could be coincidence but hard to say for sure. Certainly, it doesn't seem to be a common problem on paleo. If I were you, I'd try a more gradual switchover next time. Make your changes cautiously and slowly. Give your body time to adapt. Any type of sudden and drasic dietary change is hard on the body at first.

Yeah, i agree with you, Eva. Drastic dietary changes may put the body under a lot of stress thus compromising the immune system... – Flavio M. Feb 8 2011 at 12:31
