What do no-shampoo folks do after swimming in a chlorine-laden lap pool? Just rinsing with water doesn't seem to do the trick in my hair - but battling back the chlorine with the chemicals in my shampoo seems like a poor option as well.

I love how envigorating swimming is and the convenience of my complex's free lap pool is hard to beat. So for the sake of this question let's say "don't swim in a chlorine-laden lap pool" is not an option.

I swam in college. The girls on the team used to do this: Get your hair wet with regular water in the shower, and then put a cap on before you get in. I don't know how it works but apparently it does

This is what my friends do too. – mari May 2 2011 at 21:44

This is supposedly because the hair absorbs the regular water and, once wet, will not absorb with chlorinated water. – Primal Mama May 3 2011 at 4:21
I do this, and I put conditioner in my wet hair before putting the swim cap on. – Elise Dec 22 2011 at 17:01

I believe rinsing with vinegar after swimming gets chlorine out. My mom always did that with us as a kid otherwise my hair would turn green!

YOu could just use regular all natural soap. I use natural almond oil soap to keep my hair clean. I have tried soap from a number of oils, but one I have found made from almond oil seems to be most gentle on my hair. I read the ingredients carefully to make sure the only ingredients are saponified oils.

I wear a swim cap to swim (it's obligatory here) and use shampoo and conditioner from "the body shop" to wash off after swimming. Unfortunately that's the only solution I can think of.

Maybe coating your hair with coconut oil first would repel the water, thus chlorine in it. then worry about getting the healthy coconut oil out.

When I need to use shampoo, for whatever reason, my hair is very smooth and happy with this one. I'm sure there are others out there, but I was amazed how soft and nice my hair feels--and my scalp doesn't itch, which is amazing.

i swim with a silicone hat, but i hear that neoprene ones are much better at keeping the water out. there is one I plan to get. the My swim cap Diva (it is supposed to be perfect for those with long hair)!
