It seems like almost every newborn I know of who is being breastfed exhibits an allergy to dairy.
To be clear, the nursing mother must stop eating dairy products so that the cow (or goat) milk proteins do not get into her breastmilk and cause problems for the child.
What I would like to know is: Has this always been the case, but just ignored hitherto?
Or is this a recent thing, brought on by structural changes in our food supply?
Breastfed two kiddos whilst drinking low fat milk(wouldn't do that now, obviously) and neither kid had any issues. I did Have to use only one side at a time for the first several months, or the kids would get too much fore milk which is high in lactose and had some diarrhea. Once I switched to one side at a times the kiddos got all the fat rich hind milk, there were no problems. There are a lot of suBtleties to nursing that we don't share as well now (except on the Internet). I wonder if many problems are due to the lack of nursing culture.
Maybe it's all the hormones in the diary these days. In older times, the cows were raised naturally on their natural foods and their udders were not infected and full of puss that made it's way into the milk. Ick. Then the milk is cooked/pasturized which kills all the enzymes that help us digest it so more undigested diary makes its way to the gut flora, throwing that balance off further. Then as was mentioned, the mother is probably already full of wheat, causing leaky gut, thus allowing more of the diary to escape the gut and get into places it shouldn't. The wheat weakens the gut and then the diary, in its now less digested and less natural state, also weakens the gut and there is a one two punch that allows both wheat and diary and whatever else to escape the confinement field of the gut. The baby's response may well be to just increased levels of all kinds of problems that the diary intake contributes towards. It may not be any one specific thing, but a whole constellation of things that contribute. Lowering levels of one thing, in this case the diary, may lower the level of overall problems, like leaky gut, unwanted hormone intake, bacterial overgrowth, insulin surges due to sugar intake, increased eating of wheat and other carbs due to insulin surges, etc.
I believe it has to do with the poor, poor standard american diet that most consume. The immune system is shot in the mother and the baby gets the effects of that. It happened with my first and not my second or third. I was able to learn from my mistakes and eat properly after the 1st time around.
Dr. Weston A. Price's book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration", might be of interest. His photographs of, and reports on, facial and dental structure/health for those who keep their ancestral diets, and those who adopted a modern diet make quite a strong impression. The differences in children born after the parents had adopted a modern diet are striking.
Here is a link to read the book online at gutenberg:
Dr. Blake Donaldson found that allergies are manifestation of shock tissue. He asked his patients about their parents and grandparents, what ailments they had, and what they ate. His book, "Strong Medicine" is fascinating. I have yet to find his book online, but got one at a reasonable price through addall.com
Here, a small bit of information about Dr. Donaldson's diet and work:
Barry Groves has some excellent information on "You are what your grandparents ate", epigenetics, etc.
"...it suggests that a pregnant mother's diet can affect her health in such a way that, not only her children but her grandchildren and possibly generations even further down the line could also inherit the same health problems."
There are probably other good references on how the diet and lifestyle of the parents and grandparents affect children and grandchildren. These are the references I knew of.
Hope this helps a bit.
because they are vaccinated before their incredibly under-developed immune systems have a chance to do anything for themselves - it's amazing that many more do not die from the crap that is in vaccines... sorry - but that is true - check the curves of infant vaccination against the curves fo apparent allergies - voila--
I breastfed all five of my children (born 2002-2007) whilst eating the SAD (unfortunately) - including whole milk and cheese - and had absolutely no problems. No excessive crying or gas or intestinal upsets with any of them.
All breastfed exclusively for 6+ months and all are now hale and hearty (and Low Carb, now!)
(brainstorming) : Could it be that the mothers you know are a younger generation? The daughters of women who ate the SAD and raised them on the SAD? Perhaps being brought up on the SAD damages the immune system to the point that it causes these problems in young mothers.
I was born in 1964. I was raised on good wholesome whole foods until the mid 70s when my mother began to give in to the whole SAD crap propaganda and even then she tended to stick with healthier choices; homemade yoghurt, whole wheat bread, fresh veg, plenty of meat, etc.
Just a thought.
All three of my kids had trouble with dairy protein while being breastfed. My wife had to eliminate all dairy from her diet for 9-12 months for each of them. We're both healthy people who eat right and exercise, so who knows why. Anyway, all three got over it by the time they turned two.
I did not eat paleo during my pregnancy/breast-feeding years, but I did notice that my consumption of cows milk (I am married to a farmer, and I KNEW my source) made my baby cry a lot. I did not notice the correlation until one weekend vacation without my huge milk consumption stopped her discomfort. I stop all dairy during my breast feeding years. Everyone is fine now, with no intolerances, growing and thriving.
The Babies gut bacteria is populated by the mother
Pastuerization destroys alot of the enzymes/lactase
Hormones and Poor diet given to the cows doesn't help
I'm inclined to believe it boils down to beneficial bacteria.
Raw grassfed organic milk or nothing for me.
