I can never reach the purple color on the Keto Stix. I know it doesn't matter what color as long as some ketones register. But I up my fats and stuff and NEVER reach that purple--the most I ever get to is "moderate". So now its like a challenge for me to get to PURPLE :) guess I never asked my question -- how do you reach purple? Or has anyone had weight loss success without reaching that end of the stix?
Your question has been voted down twice. I just gave you an up vote. To the folks who voted you down, I'd like to say that some people have good reasons for wanting to attain high levels of ketosis. For example, I'm on a medical ketogenic diet for migraine and I try to keep my blood level of beta-hydroxybutyrate (the main ketone) above 5.5 mmol/L at all times. I track my ketosis level just like diabetics track their blood glucose.
Ketosis is widely misunderstood. One of the misunderstandings is that you can induce it simply by reducing or eliminating carbs. This isn't true.
Actually, you need to do three things to achieve significant levels of ketosis by means of diet:
Total calorie restriction. Eat fewer calories than are normally required to maintain your weight.
Protein restriction. Eat a maximum of 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.
Carb restriction. You may be able to eat a few grams per day but the easiest thing is to eliminate them completely. (I eat between zero and six grams of carbs per day.)
In addition, you need to divide your daily food intake into at least three equal meals so you don't get too many total calories or too much protein at any one time.
For extra purplishness, eat a tablespoon of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil at every meal and count it as part of your total calories.
I promise you, if you do all those things, your Ketostix will turn purple.
You also will be very unhappy because you will discover that you are eating a diet that consists almost entirely of fat (about 90% by calories) with a tiny amount of protein. Unfortunately, this is what a real ketogenic diet is like.
The reason that people on Atkins induction and similar diets have trouble staying in ketosis is usually because they eat too much protein. If the body gets extra protein, it converts the excess into glucose. Glucose is what keeps you out of ketosis.
By the way, Ketostix are so inaccurate that they are practically useless. If you really want to know your level of ketosis, buy yourself a Precision Xtra blood meter manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. (That's the name of the product in the US. In Europe it's called the Optima Xceed.) The meter costs $15 in the US and each disposable test strip is $5. Peer-reviewed reviewers have found that this meter is extremely accurate. I've been using it for months and I think it's great.
The more keto adapted you are, the less the stick changes.
If your body is good at running on ketones, excess don't spill into urine until you have more than you're capable of utilizing.
In short, if you HAVE to have it purple, eat more fat,MCT like coconut oil is easiest.
I don't do any of those recommendations about how to turn the stick dark purple...my worry was that I am always in the moderate to deep purple range at all times of the day. But now I know this is OK!
I eat maybe 10-15 carbs a day....drink 120ounces of water (15 glasses of H2O!) however I do eat more fat versus protein...and I also work out intensely for 1 hour doing Cardio
I am never hungry except sometimes I get bloated because I add Chia seeds as a fiber supplement (they only have 2 net cars to be counted).
But I poop a lot :) (sometimes more than I feel I ate so I am wondering if it is fat too).
I use the ketostix and when I always see that nice eggplant purple color, I feel so good about myself. I am only in the 5th day... but so far, so good! Maybe it's cause I am 30yo and I am a male. I dunno...
How many times a day do you eat and at what times??
I am incorporating Intermittent Fasting with this and usually eat between 3pm and 6pm.
I have been doing this for 6 days and my ketostix are moderate at best.. I also drink a lot of fluids - not sure of the exact amount, but i constantly drink drink throughout the day as a way to curb my hunger pangs and I would estimate around 1 US gal (128oz!) give or take.
I seem to have lost 3 lbs of weight since i started 6 days ago - concerned that i am not in ketosis.
