I am following a paleo based ketogenic diet with good results so far. From what I have read I should be consuming approx 0.8-1g of protein per pound of body weight to provide my body with sufficient protein for maintenance but not too much so it uses excess protein for fuel. When calculating the amount of protein found in beef is there a difference between the amount of protein found in raw beef vs cooked beef?

I have looked a a few online sites but they tend to list different amounts of protein in, say 1oz of beef; 7g in 1oz raw beef vs maybe 5g in 1oz cooked. I am thinking it would be preferable to calculate protein content based on cooked beef. Any thoughts or opinions on this?

Are you trying to induce a high level of ketosis for medical purposes or is this a mild ketogenic diet for weight loss? – Rob from ketocure.com Feb 13 2011 at 4:18

There's more protein in cooked beef vs raw beef because of the water loss (depending on how much you cook it). However, there's such a thing as overthinking some of the details (cooked vs uncooked). These are general numbers, different people react differently. Go with the easiest numbers you have to work from. Assume a 58% conversion to glucose in the body. If that exceeds your carb amount for the day, go lighter on protein.

If you can, count what you consume. I use MyNetDiary.
