Like you have to go to the bathroom bad. I am wondering if I am stressing them too much. Urine is strong and i am in ketosis. so maybe I am not drinking enough water?

Thanks for the responses! It appears that I was VERY VERY dehydrated. I have to constantly remind myself to drink water not tea with cream ;)

I have had that happen, too, and drinking some water made the pain go away and made my urine less strong.

seconded. I noticed an increased need for water during ketosis, and distinct discomfort if I didnt get it. I drank appx 3 liters a day, kept a Nalgene(bpa free) at my desk and drained it several times. – Stephen-Aegis Feb 13 2011 at 18:30
ok, I know for sure I am not drinking enough so I am going to seriously try to ramp that up. – paleoprimal Feb 13 2011 at 18:37

If this doesn't go away quickly, you should see a doctor.

Actually, that sounds like a UTI - Urinary tract infection. Sometimes it can travel really far up the ureters and feel like kidney pain, I had that a couple of months ago. Definitely go the doctor route! And keep drinking HEAPS of water to flush it out.

That's what I was thinking too. Especially if there is a strong urine smell, not just color. Strong urine smell is a classic sign of UTI. – Eva Feb 13 2011 at 21:02
it's not a UTI. i've been tested for UTI every time i've gone in for kidney pain. it's never UTI, and I have had this exact symptom for years. – Jack Kronk Feb 15 2011 at 21:08

I don't know what's causing your pain, but ketosis and concentrated urine are both risk factors for kidney stones, so I urge you (as others have done) to drink more water.

You need to drink more water in ketosis to avoid kidney stones. You probably need to drink substantially more water than you are. If your urine is dark yellow (and you haven't been supplementing B vitamins and the like) it means you're dehydrated. This isn't a matter of "stressing" the kidneys, it's a matter of not taking in enough water to keep the kidneys flushed and prevent various acids and minerals from staying too long and forming stones.

drink water immediately and it will help within minutes, literally. but that's a bandaid to an sympton ailment that you are feeling because your kidneys are complaining.

personally, i've had several kidney stones before going paleo. i know exactly what that feeling is like (waking up with kidney pain). my stones were always calcium oxalate. chris masterjohn makes an extraordinarily strong case on the WAPF website about the role of fat soluable vitamins A,D and K playing a huge role in how your body distributes and absorbs calcium. so basically the fermented cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil blend could play a major role with kidney function and calcium.

for the last 6 months, I've been taking that combo and I have noticed a huge improvement. now, i also completely changed my diet to lacto-paleo, but I pretty much never have kidney pain anymore and I haven't had a stone since. also, ironically, since switching to paleo, i drink much less water and yet still no kidney pain, almost like there's nothing there is no longer any calcium oxalate to 'flush' anymore.

hope that helps, jack k

Also if you are eating to much protein and not enough fruits & veggies, they will hurt from all the meat. I drink detox teas, at least one a day to help keep the kidneys and liver from being overworked if I eat a lot of meat especially red meat! I LOVE my meat tho! Apples also help well!

im sorry, I completely disagree. You do not NEED fruits and veggies for your kidneys and liver to work. They do not HURT from the meat. – Stephen-Aegis Feb 13 2011 at 18:29
Jessica, it is more likely that you are getting WATER from the fruits & veg, rather than meat by itself causing stress to the kidneys. – Cheryl - Diabetes Bootcamp Feb 14 2011 at 2:14
detox teas seem kind of scary to me as well. id be curious if you arent leeching something out of your system with them as well. – Stephen-Aegis Feb 18 2011 at 16:26
