I agree his forum was getting out of hand. But he seems to have thrown the baby out with the bathwater and punished everyone because of a few rotten apples.

I seldom visited his forum - the spam was often overwhelming. I would have canned it a long time ago. – terrence Feb 13 2011 at 19:57

Or you could be thankful that Dr. Harris provided you with amazing content, for free, for a long time and will likely continue to do so.

I think the closing of his forums is great news. Better to bring more of the community here than have it fractured all over the place.

And now the fine doctor can focus on what he's best at instead of being forum maintainer, which is costly in both time and money.

Dr. Harris - Thank you for all your great work

I disagree only with the idea that it was good to direct folks over here - I love the high signal-to-noise ratio at PH, and I'd hate to see that go down. – Elizabeth Feb 13 2011 at 19:51
Elizabeth - Yeah, in some ways I'm fan of multiple types of forums. Diversification. Though at the same time, having a single place to go can be good... at least until it gets overrun with junk. But with Kurt's it seems people used it as a way to ask him questions. Forums are extremely time consuming if you choose to moderate them. I'm surprised he kept with it this long. – sean Feb 13 2011 at 20:28
Absolutely, his time is far too valuable to be fussing with a forum. – Elizabeth Feb 13 2011 at 21:03

While I dont always agree with everything that he writes, his blog is very helpful. He doesnt get paid. He doesnt have spam advertisements. He donates HIS time for us. Read what you want to read about and ignore the parts you dont want to read.

If you want to pay him year round to write for you, then you can dictate what he writes about, otherwise, He's going to write what he wants to, and we will appreciate it each in our own way.

edit:

PaNu Forums being closed may be a blessing in disguise... now he has more time to blog instead of moderating!

I just wanted to add, Dr Kurt Harris of PaleoNu is by far my favorite blog/writer. I have found on the topic of Nutrition, I stand behind him more than any other prominent figure in optimal nutrition nowadays. – Stephen-Aegis Feb 13 2011 at 19:39

I don't think he's gone off the deep end. I'm glad he's blogging regularly again and I like his new approach. His medical analyses are excellent and based on science, not speculation or half-baked nonsense. It's his blog, done on his own time, so he can do what he wishes with it. There's a lot to be learned there. An MD who thinks for himself and doesn't tow the standard line is refreshing.

Took this out of my post. Question was edited:

What do you mean by "other b.s."? It's not clear in your question.

It's his blog. He should run it however works for him. Of course.

Dr. Harris puts a huge amount of time into his research, and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge into his posts. His blog is #1 in my mind for the best content, and I absolutely love his ascerbic style. If closing the forums will help him focus on his research and blogging, then I'm glad he took that step.

The only thing that worries me is this

"2) Many of the thread topics are either trivial or dangerously inappropriate - people giving each other highly questionable dietary or medical advice that I would disagree with. These conversations are occurring on my domain, so if I don't join in it gives the impression of approval or sanction."

One would though that frequent PaleoNuer's view would be close to the author's.

He seems to have way low tolerance for any kind of dissenting comet. relax doctor. eat a pizza or something. J/K

He's not trying to engage in debate, though. He's just blogging his POV, and people keep trying to turn his posts into discussions. He believes what he writes, and why is it his obligation to break down every detail for folks who aren't as educated or as well-read? We're lucky to have him. He doesn't have to take pot-shots from the peanut gallery if he doesn't want to. – Elizabeth Feb 13 2011 at 21:05

Such types are often quite intelligent and worth reading, but are not always the best types to moderate. Different people have talent in different areas. – Eva Feb 13 2011 at 21:06

I've never heard of a dissenting comet. Does it refuse to crash into the surface of planets? Does it not hang out near the Kuiper belt? – Chickenosaurus Rex Feb 13 2011 at 21:30
I didn't see evidence of intellectual intolerance, but some evidence of impatience. I wondered from time to time whether it would be possible to engage a volunteer or low-paid moderator. (Alas, I'm not nominating myself!) Some of his forum comments were substantive, so to that extent I'll miss the forums. – Steve Brecher Feb 13 2011 at 21:38
