Lately i've been craving sugar like crazy and instead of going for crap foods i decided to get me some honey (the regular stuff you find at supermarkets). The problem is, once i start eating it, it's as if someone is forcing me to eat it, i simply CAN.NOT.STOP!

Now, recently i got hold of some organic raw honey and curiously i can't binge on it. I eat a teaspoon and that's about it.

Does this have to do with the fact that it's raw, or could i just coincidently be going through a no-carb-craving phase?

I truly feel your pain. Me + commercial honey = Demented Carb-Craving Pooh Bear...{"MOAR HUNNY..."}, "very little brain" element very much included. I hate carby-stabby-hunger that results. – familygrokumentarian Feb 16 2011 at 13:08
Honey is/was praised in ancient cultures and obviously there's a reason for that...it's too addicting and yummy :D – Flavio M. Feb 16 2011 at 18:37

Commericial processed honey is nothing like the raw unprocessed stuff. I have tried several different brands of raw. "Really Raw" makes a nice one, with crispy chewy cappings on the top layer in the jar. I also take active manuka honey, which is highly antimicrobial and has more of a medicinal flavor, but is still delicious.

Regarding the fructose in honey, Chris Masterjohn did a fantastic write up on the difference in the affects of honey fructose versus pure fructose without the other components of honey. In multiple examples, the negative affects of the purified fructose did not occur with the honey fructose. Chris believes it may be due to the antioxidants and minerals in raw honey.

... a free nugget for all. my favorite snack is a shared spoonful of half sprouted raw almond pecan butter and half raw unprocessed honey. Amazing combo! Flavio, ditch the processed garbage. Embrace the raw.

Honey isn't the best thing to substitute for other sugars due to the fructose content. If I am craving something sweet I will usually just eat some dark chocolate or even some coconut oil out of the jar (this tastes sweet to me). Anyway, I imagine that it is most likely a coincidence - perhaps you over-ate the commercial honey and now simply don't want any more?

Yeah, i definitely overate :P – Flavio M. Feb 16 2011 at 10:41
I did something similar in the past with pork (of all things!); I really had a craving for it so bought a load one Saturday whilst grocery shopping. I ate it throughout the week. Now the smell of it cooking makes me nauseous and I only eat it rarely. I do think it is possible to kill a craving for something with a lot of said item, but is probably not at all healthy to do so. – Jason Feb 16 2011 at 11:24
When I am craving something sweet, I eat a an ounce or so of hard cheese instead and the craving for sweet goes away. – Helen Feb 17 2011 at 2:44
