What paleo foods last without refrigeration? How long does it take certain foods to spoil?

-eggs (boiled) -cooked meats (ground beef, steak, etc.)

Is it possible for me to bring REAL food on to a 15 hour flight?

You have a couple options for a flight.

1. Fasting

  • If your traveling time is less than 24 hours you can just do an intermittent fast. This is good for you and completely eliminates the problem of trying to find our bring food.

2. Snacks: Snacks range from extremely simple to more involved. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Stick of butter: This is my favorite. Grab a stick of pastured butter (kerrygold is great), and eat it along the way. Lots of healthy calories, so you don't get hungry and it tastes good to. Awesome conversation starter on the plane, I get some great reactions.

  • Dark chocolate: Another favorite, tastes great, has plenty of calories.

  • Hardboiled eggs

  • Jerky- just make sure it doesn't have wheat added in the soy sauce. Making your own is easy.

  • Avocado

  • Mixed nuts - preferably macadamia nuts, because they have the best fat profile of all nuts.

  • Sardines - Be aware these are very fragrant, if you open a can on the plane, everyone might hate you for the rest of the flight. They are a delicious and filling snack though...

3. Tupperware meal:

  • This is also pretty easy, grab some old tupperware and through some precooked meals in it. Lack of refrigeration shouldn't be a problem for the a day of flying.

I agree with the other answers as I've had luck with pretty much all of their suggestions. One other thing that has gotten me through 12+ hours of air travel is to make mashed sweet potatoes (with lots of raw, grassfed butter), mix that in a tupperwear bowl with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

It's insanely delicious and lasted through the whole flight, though Im not sure how much longer than 12 hours you could get away with.

High quality salamis, prosciutto and hard raw cheeses in a seal-up tub. Maybe add some berries? Nuts? This goes great with the mini bottles of wine they have! :)

Yeah, make yourself a nice charcuterie platter. Real food won't spoil in that timeframe. I've kept good salami and raw-milk cheeses overnight w/o refrigeration on work trips, though I don't think I'd go longer than that. – 42 Feb 17 2011 at 0:52

Before I flew to Spain, I cooked up chicken breasts and some bison burgers to hold me over. Even though I made the silly mistake of forgetting about the whole metal detector/baggage scanning component of flying by wrapping the goods in aluminum foil, the guys at the TSA area were cool about it and let me pass onto my gate.

Wrapping the food to keep em warm in aluminum foil wasn't my finest hour as a traveler, but having paleo food on hand absolutely came in handy once I saw what my parents were served on board the flight (some strange looking thing called 'chicken' covered in this gross brown gravy ugh!) I'm sure if you put foods in plastic containers, you should be OK. Jerky is always great (Paleo-Kit it up!) and fasting is always a fine option as well, but most importantly have a safe trip! :)

If you have a long flight (15 hours) tell the airline in advance that you want Gluten free meals. You will be able to add to whatever you take with you. Don't count on taste, but you will have some variety.
